Title: Prosine 2.5 Battery Temperature Sensor
Post by: Mark D on April 06, 2018, 08:17:51 pm
Hey all, I was wondering if anyone had any advice about Xantrex battery temperature sensors.  I am on the lookout for a replacement for mine since the wire fell out, ostensibly part number 808-0231.  This part is NOT able to be located.  When I called Xantrex they mentioned the sensors are not compatible with each other.  The interesting thing though is that my sensor which should look like this

(https://www.foreforums.com/imagecache.php?image=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn3.volusion.com%2Fxmh9y.n4gf6%2Fv%2Fvspfiles%2Fphotos%2FXA-808-0231-2.jpg&hash=1c19e63ffebc0fab0dc5412d0643f4ed" rel="cached" data-hash="1c19e63ffebc0fab0dc5412d0643f4ed" data-warn="External image, click here to view original" data-url="http://cdn3.volusion.com/xmh9y.n4gf6/v/vspfiles/photos/XA-808-0231-2.jpg)

Actually looks like this

Which if they really aren't compatible would go a long way to explaining why my charger always seemed to have a bit lower voltage.  I was a bit surprised when I disconnected it and set the battery temp on "warm" voltage was higher than I am used to meaning this has been an issue for a while.

Since I am so unable to find 808-0231 my question is if anyone has any idea if the almost identical looking part but different color, 808-0232 is actually the same resistance and would work properly.

The schneider electric website specifically says it isn't compatible and nobody anywhere has ever suggested they are so I know I am fishing for a "yes it works" in a sea of "it's not going to work" but I figure it's worth a try ;)

Does this match our model.

The truecharge*2* one is specifically the one they said wouldn't work.  I couldn't really get a straight answer on some of the others, probably just because the stuff hasn't been manufactured in so long.

Mark, How about fixing your 'wire fell out' sensor.  Trim outer cover, solder wire to thermistor.  The sensor does not electrically contact the mounting hole part or battery terminal.  It is just measuring temperature of the battery terminal connector.

Xantrex Prosine models get a little confusing, because a much later model, and maybe still current, Xantrex Prosine 2.0 is a completely different charger that  does not resemble the 2.5 and 3.0 models that are so popular in Foretravels.

The 2.0, which we have, uses that yellow unit you linked to.

So extra clarity with Xantrex may be needed, especially if the tech on the phone has never seen the older 2.5 & 3.0, as they may be over 10 years  old.

I  guess you could measure the resistance of your broken sensor and measure the resistance of replacement to know if they are the same.  The complexity comes in thermistor resistance over temp changes.

There are 4 wires coming out.  I assume a thermistor only needs 2 of the 4 RJ11 wires.  Do you recall which are hooked up?  Honestly mine might be fixable but the wire failed right at the epoxy blob so it'll be a bit interesting.

Any chance previous owner just soldered the wires to that connector?

I don't think so.  It looks like it frayed and degraded due to some combination of heat, viberation and diesel fumes.  Like everything on this coach ;)

A shot in the dark. Many temp sensors are 10k ohms - so if you can get a reading on it, it may be available at a local HVAC supply house for less than $20.

If it's just a 10k thermistor I have a stack of 20 of them ;)  I figured it'd be different because xantrex made 5 different parts and said none of them are compatible.

You might be able to get more info if you call bio-benefit energy in Costa Mesa, Ca and talk to Eric.  He has mentioned lack of parts on some brands.  Prosine was one if memory serves me.

Or JB inverter repair in Chino Hills, Ca?  John
