Title: Who Else would you recommend?
Post by: jhardman on April 27, 2018, 01:25:18 pm
I've had a quote  on repairing a little love rub I put on my coach.  I explained I was interested in having graphics painted and small modification, but nothing near a full paint.  In fact, the original lines etc would remain, minus some bigger swooshes where nothing has been, so no real worry of ghosting.

I solicited some AMAZING help from one of our very talented Mid-South chapter members who shall remain nameless right now.  This person did an AMAZING job!

A full paint, starting at $25k or an exact redo of original graphics.  I want to update some. I don't want a full paint, nor do I want to afford a full paint.

Who else would you recommend proximal to DFW? Hoping to have it done in July when we will be away from the coach for a non motorcoach vacation.

I have a call in Justin Lindsey at FOT and Gary with Adkison's in Nacogdoches, but who's would you guys use?

I would imagine they wouldn't do it due ghosting issues from the old decals that can't be avoided.

Try calling RV Fog Doctor in Searcy, Arkansas.  They do collision repair and painting.  They have a fully enclosed paint booth that holds Class A rigs.

If I'm painting over all the original areas where the vinyl stripes were there shouldn't be any ghosting should there?

Thanks,  Chris, I'll do that.

Correct.  That's what Xtreme did for me last year.  New stripe scheme that covers the original pattern to mask ghosting.  A lot of extra low-profit design & layout work for them.  I think it must be a business decision to focus only on the higher margin FBP jobs or the simple cookie cutter stripe replacements.

I keep hearing from members of the forum, they have had Done exactly what I want them to do. Your coach is a prime example.  However,  Finding someone is a challenge.

Are you happy with yours? Any advice ?

I think there could be a mis-understanding.

And there are owners, James & Jennifer for clarification, if you want Xtreme to do the job.

It does seem inconsistent for them to call themselves an "Xtreme" custom shop and refuse custom stripe jobs.  They would have preferred that I go back with my stock stripes but they didn't seem to mind too much that I wanted something else.  They would have even let me keep the ghosted areas exposed if I had insisted, but they wisely talked me out of that and designed something that completely covered them.  Maybe they're just in a bad mood this week, or they have too many FBP's on the calendar right now to have to mess with it.  Even with the FBP jobs, they'd prefer to steer you toward standard patterns & color schemes than truly original, custom work.  As far as our experience, it probably wasn't the overwhelmingly positive experience that others have posted but overall I'm satisfied with them.  Maybe like Barry said, talk directly to James.  If you have an already prepared design in mind, and can make it as easy as possible for them to say yes, they'll reconsider.

I think there must be. Kristin says "the shop foreman says..." I'm curious if the owner knows the shop foreman is turning away business.  Does anyone have direct contact info for Mr. Stallings?

When you mention "minus some bigger swooshes where nothing has been", what does this mean?

Above the midline stripe of the existing stripes over the large white gel coat area around the bathroom area, some large more contemporary ribbons.

Similar idea but less complex design than bdale's seen above. I'm just talking two large ribbons in the open space

I own a collision repair shop in Boise, ID. Been at it 34 years. In reading between the lines here, I would say that what you want them to do...they don't want to put they're name on it. They obviously have plenty of work..and your asking them to do something that they have made the business decision doesn't fit they're business plan anymore. Please don't flame me...but that's what it sounds like. We gave up complete paint jobs on vehicles about 10 years ago. Not profitable enough anymore..plain and simple biz decision...and not a day goes by where somebody doesn't chew me out for that decision..

Hi Mike, never any flames here! I guess that is the case; however, what I don't really get is the inconsistency. Others on the forum have had this kind of paint job done recently. They will go go back with exact original vinyl scheme and allow color change, which is all I want with the addition of two larger ribbonesque pieces in the large vacant area.  I can PM you a picture, I'm trying to not post it until it's finished.

I'm sure someone will want the business and do a great job. I'm certainly not trying roast them, I'm just disappointed when the people recommended to help you won't help you. I guess as you said, not in their business model.  I'm in a different line of work, but I try to serve any client who wants to do business with me, largely because of the repeat and referral nature of my business.  It would be like me refusing to work with folks buying $100k house rather than $500k. I know people do it, it's just not the model I would want to put my name behind. To each their own though. I understand they need to make money and their business is their business.

I will say RV Fog has been wonderful and very responsive so far.  I also imagine Justin Lindsey at FOT will want to help.  Gary Adkison is also going to look at it Monday or Tuesday.

If you're thinking it would be because of the ghosting issue, that is a non issue as I understand it, as I want to cover every where there has been vinyl with paint, plus a little more!

Happy Camping! 😊

We had a repair done a Adkison Body Repair in Nac in September.  I don't know if the do large paint work but, they did a great job on the rear corner of our coach.  I would use them again.  Their color match and blend was very good.

Thank you, Glen! Appreciate the recommendation! I'm more leary of having my FT painted than I have ever been with any house, car, boat, or previous camper! Lol

My comments on Xtreme and my guess on what is happening. Note - I was just down at Xtreme in March of this year and checked in with the team.

My suspicions are that what is being requested would be too big an effort for what they could charge for the work, so they defer to "level 1" repaint stripes, or full body paint options only. There are only two logical reasons why they declined to do the work, they can make more money with their resources on other work, or they don't want to produce a product that they feel would not live up to their standards.

Good folks, I wish James and all of the folks at Xtreme well.

  • Xtreme is VERY busy with work
  • Collision repairs and Prevost paint are a big part of the work, and probably the most profitable business that they preform.
  • FBR now down to one slot either every month or every other month - they just don't have the capacity to do all the work they have and advised me that they have not had a lot of luck hiring people that can produce the level of work that they want to produce - so less FBP are being scheduled.
  • They have a contract to refurbish ambulance bodies - last I heard they had been asked to double the number of bodies that they were doing and declined that opportunity as well.
  • James Stallings over the last few years has been distracted by significant back pain issues and more recently a bout with Cancer.
My suspicions are that what is being requested would be too big an effort for what they could charge for the work, so they defer to "level 1" repaint stripes, or full body paint options only. Our coach was painted in Phoenix, and I was not 'leery'.  ^.^d

I have found over the years when you have a conflict over something to go to the person in charge to explain the conflict.  9 times out of 10 there just was a miss understanding.  Call James

Life to short to worry

You are so right about that Jimmy!  Every minute is a gift! I should just accept the no and move on to be honest. Sounds like Xtreme is probably busy enough! I can certainly understand how back pain and issues can impact you as well and hate to hear he is having back trouble!

I have edited my post and apologize for the negative tone of the original post. I certainly didn't mean it vindictively. I'm simply looking for recommendations.

Good will toward all!

I don't think James is in the office a lot right now - Greg is likely the best person to speak with regarding quotes, scheduling and "the art of the possible" - You could leave a message for James or Jennifer, but it may be a while before you hear back from them.

Thanks, Tim. I'm just gonna' accept the no, I already got and see who else might be able to help! No reason to try to convince them to do business with me or complicate their already full work load. I'm sure something will work and God's got something great in store!

Apologize for the negativity I brought earlier and hope no one thinks I meant it maliciously, as that it just not my nature. As Jimmy said, life is too short to worry!
