Title: ZipDee Awning Strap Repair
Post by: Ron & Connie Sedgley on May 03, 2018, 03:53:08 pm
I guess its time for a new awning, but I would rather try a quick & easy repair, if possible.
First concern is the PS window awning hold down strap.  As seen in the attached photo, it is quite worn & torn.
The only way that I can think of repairing is to take the entire awning off,lay it on a table with a sewing machine, and patch & repair.
Any other possibly easier suggestions??

Second... the main seem above the hold down strap on the awning itself is beginning to separate. Suggestions??

You can purchase new straps from Zip Dee. You'll need a color code.

We've repaired those straps using dental floss rather than thread with a piece of thin material on both sides for backing. No sewing machine needed. a thin drill bit with a battery drill gets you started. I can't wait to see Bruce's 'easy way to get it apart' !

Call Zip Dee and order a new strap. Easy to replace. Even I could do it.

Along with the awning get some Zip Dee pop rivets to hold the strap on the roller tube.  The head of the Zip Dee rivets is larger than the ones found at the HD or Lowes.  Contact Zip Dee and they will advise How to Measure for them to make the strap.

You could also buy some Sunbrella fabric and make your own.

Re:  Seam - We did use some Awning Repair Tape for about a year on the top and the bottom of the seam until we decided to make our own awnings.  While investigating repair costs, taking the awning down, having a canvas shop resew the seams using a V92 thread, then reinstalling the awning seemed to only address half of the problem.  The thread that is used to sew the seams together has deteriorated and we felt that the awning material had seen better days as well.  So the cost to repair the seam and then replace the entire awning in another year or two didn't make sense to us.

You could take the coach to MOT, FT or another Zip Dee Awning Dealer and have them replace the awning(s)/straps

Just my 2 cents.

You can find a local Canvas shop. if you are able to remove, they can replace the fabric.

Just ran across this post and thought I'd lend an alternative in case someone else has the problem.  I removed the strap and bought some webbing at my local outdoor sports shop.  Climbers and backpackers use this stuff for all kinds of weight bearing tasks.  The webbing already had a small loop on one end, but if not just sew one in.  Cut to the length you want and then use a Speedy Stitcher sewing awl off Amazon and go to town.  It takes a few minutes on a ladder, but I did multiple stiches in an X pattern and it works great.  Easy and the sewing thread is wax coated and UV resistant.  A sailor friend of mine taught me about it as he used it for sail tears and attaching dogs to canvas.

We use this combo to repair just about anything. If you can put the object on a flat surface, the 'glue' works fine without the awl.
