Title: Does the Generator on a '91 U280 Slide Out?
Post by: rvtinker on May 10, 2018, 04:59:29 pm
I have seen mention of the ability to slide out the generator for servicing on some Foretravels, but I am not sure it applies to my '91 GV U280.  Mine has the Onan 7.5 Kw diesel generator, normally found on the U300s of that vintage.  Can anyone tell me if this one has the slide out feature or not?

Bummer.  Okay, I guess I will just have to deal with it.  It is going to make replacing the sound proofing fun.

On our '93 U280 it does slide out, but that could be a change made in our later model.  We have the 10Kw PowerTech generator.  There are two retaining bolts at the front end of the frame that you remove, then the whole mounting platform rolls out on steel wheels.  I can see the wheels when I look in the ends of the mounting frame.

Since the oil drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan, I don't see how you could change the oil if the generator did not slide out.  Surely they didn't expect the coach owner to physically remove the whole generator to perform routine maintenance.  :o

No Chuck,a picture of tinker's generator area so we can help him out, seems there is more then one kind of generator for this year and model coach. One way I can answer his question is to see what he's talking about.

Looks like you could build a platform and maybe shimmy it out if you don't have access to a forklift. You would have to take
fuel lines off along with disconnecting wires, mine has a slide and I just got it running again after working on it for a while. My
insulation looked like yours,I took the whole frame out and cleaned and repainted, also if yours is as old as the coach the
rubber isolators are most likely worn out.Would line the door with soundproofing.

John That is all on my Too Do List!! I have a motorcycle lift that I think would do the job.  I have a bunch of other Too Do's and Like Too Do's before this. I'm also trying to actually use the darn thing and not just keep updating/Fixing it!  ^.^d

Well, since everyone already covered everything for me, all I can say is thanks for the info.  It would have been nice if it slid out, maybe  there is a way to build that somehow.  I was already planning on buying one of those 1500 pound ATV lifts from Harbor Freight to help with the refrigerator swap, but it looks like it might be the ticket for the generator as well.

Thanks all,

That's what I used to pull my generator, as even though it has a slide it doesn't get it all the way out.

Don't know if this will help in your case but I have a motorcycle lift that is great for this kind of thing.  I even used it to put the 8D batteries in the coach.

Harbor Freight has 3'X4'  hydraulic platforms, Great for Batteries & side mounted power unit & lots of heavy stuff moving around in shop
Do not know about units that mount in nose of motorhome
