Title: Good Sam Roadside Assistance Question
Post by: Travelin' Man (RIP) on June 03, 2018, 01:23:19 pm
We have been with Good Sam for 12 years now and just the other day we received our renewal membership cards (upgraded to platinum as that is now the minimum coverage you can purchase for a motorized RV) automatically charged to our credit card without us having agreed to it.

I'm wondering if anyone else who has Good Sam has been put on automatic renewal (using last year's credit card info) without their knowing it.

Over the years, we have found Good Sam to be way too annoying in their marketing, and their 10% campground discount too minimal and easily substituted by military, AAA, etc.

Their retail 10% discount is nice, but we now buy mostly from Amazon.

And with FMCA's very inexpensive emergency towing option, Good Sam is less attractive.

As for credit card 'automatic' renewals Good Sam is following dozens other organizations to take advantage of having a credit card on file.  One has to make a special effort to turn off their renewal option or delete the credit card after each use.

For many years, we have protected us from automatic renewals by using a Virtual Credit Card (VAN), where a one-use alternate credit card number is assigned with its own expiration-date & CID code.

Citi Master card offers VAN's which we use for all purchases, as card can only be used by the one vendor and the card expires next month, and cannot be used after it expires.

I pay with Paypal, one payment at a time. Never had re-occuring payments without notification.
For recurring payments (i.e. utilities), I pay by signing in to my bank account and picking the payee from a list.
For free trials on line, if they require a charge card, I EXIT - those free trials are not free and I have had to cancel credit cards to stop them.

If you did not specifically authorize an automatic payment then you don't have to pay.  Dispute the charge.
