Finished building a new mud flap tonite.. I think it turned out pretty good. Kinda disappointed that FT did not offer the black bottom piece with the white Foretravel lettering but it is what it is and I'm sure soon I will like it as much as the old one. Gonna go hang it tomorrow when I get off work. Another project off the list...
I like! Our flap is original with the white lettering, and showing it's years... So when are you going into mass production?
Keith,
Do you remember the dimensions for the old and new mud flaps?
What is the method of mounting?
Thanks,
Trent
Looks great! Would you please post the materials and process that you used to create the new flap. Thank you. Ken
I bought the rubber and stainless from FOT. The rubber measurement are 14x93 inches. I also replaced the 1/4 x 2" flat bar that is used to hang it from the coach, the flat bar is a little shorter than the rubber and I got it at a local steel yard. The bar is located 3" from the top of the rubber. I used a drill press to drill 12 evenly spaced holes down the middle of the flat bar and attached the rubber to it using new 1/4 stainless bolts and lock nuts. I also drilled 2 holes for the hangers and cut the rubber where they would have room to hang from the coach( the 2 cut out squares at the top). I then marked and drilled the holes in the rubber to attach the new stainless piece and attached the stainless to the rubber. I replaced 2 of the bolts on the bottom of the stainless piece with eye bolts to allow me to pull it up out of the way with bungee cords while leveling or parking at the storage when the air pressure drops and the bags bottom out and was putting the old flap in a bind. Hope this helps and if anyone has any more questions don't hesitate to ask.
What did Foretravel charge for the pieces?
Parts from FOT were 361 shipped. 64 for the 14"x93" rubber, 216 for the stainless and screws. The rest was shipping to the Houston area.. the new 1/4x2" flat bar at the top used for hanging was 20 bucks cut to size at my local steel supplier.

Is that "FORETRAVEL" lettering on the stainless piece painted, or laser cut (i.e. holes cut all the way through the metal)?
On my new one, a few years back, the letters are cut out.
Prices from an earlier post are about what I paid. I have the original one in the barn if someone wants it.
Seems like Keith paid a very reasonable price (about $400 total) for the parts (from FOT and locally). I've just quickly searched a few of the custom mud flap vendors online, and looks like they want about $600 for a comparable setup, plus shipping.
GOOD JOB, Keith!

Yes the letters are cut out
Looks great , I'm going to have to put that on my bucket list
-----UPDATE-----
well after mounting the flap it looked good BUT I only had about 1" gap and as the coach bounced down the road it was dragging often. so when I get it back from the shop I will modify it to get more clearance between it and the ground and I will report back with what I did..
Our "mudflap" was looking kind of beatup/bent from use by previous owners and sliding down the highway when a hanger broke.
So I cut off each end to the width of the coach frame. I then bolted that remaining center piece up tight below the bumper. I had to notch it for the hitch but not a big deal. I wanted to retain a cover of some sort to hide all the hardware up between the frame rails. The bottom of the two large caster wheels are just visible if one stands back a ways from the coach.
The old chrome plated plates on the back of each mudflap on the duals were getting bad but the black rubber was still good. So I put a piece of what I cut off of the original stainless rear mudflap on each dual mudflap. Now the new wheel mudflaps are about 1" lower than the originals and won't rust like the originals.
Sorry, no pics as the coach is in storage until spring.
The stainless piece looks great. I decided to keep my old one, since I've scraped them on curbs numerous times while backing and the new ones are too nice to abuse.
Just a hint for the rubber piece, instead of paying $$$ from FT. ,Rubber gym floor matting works well and really cheap. In the process of replacing mine and have a laser shop in mind here in Alberta to cut the letters out.

You can also use belting (Cloth or nylon inserted rubber milti-ply) with rubber plies on the outsude. Very common and fairly easy to find.
Conveyor belting, available at places like Grainger
Another option is to do away with it altogether. That's what I did with this coach. I am using this Protect-a-Toad deal. Without it the car gets pretty dirty. With it, the front stays nice and clean.

Note: This one doesn't extend all the way to the car because we have a ReadyBrake which adds 18" or so to the length of the hitch.
I haven't put mine back on since last year's Alaska trip. Haven't decided yet if I will or not, toad isn't getting any dirter with it off than before.
