Does anyone know of an inspector in the San Antonio area.. To far away for Bret and I suspect he doesn't need to be bothered today. Thanks... Dub
Ya, we just got back from Alaska 2 hours ago. Great trip. But, on the go (ship, train, 2 buses and 2 airplanes) for the last 38 hours. Nap time!
No, don't know anyone in SA. If headed over this way (League City), and want your coach inspected, let me know.
Brett
10/4 Thanks
Hmmm. I just got off Solstice in Seattle 6/1 after 1 week AK cruise, were we on same ship?
Tim,
We were on the Westerdam (Holland America) Vancouver to Seward. Arrived Seward yesterday 4:30 am.
IMO, a cruise (whether cruise ship or Alaska Marine Highway) is MUCH more scenic than driving the Alcan. Note: have driven the Alcan 3 times and cruised 9. Yes, it is like a pilgrimage. Went by some of our old haunts in Juneau where we were married and then lived in 1975/1976..
If anyone is headed that way, we can suggest inexpensive/worthwhile things to do in each port.
Small world story: My brother (retired dentist from College Station, TX) trailered his 32' motorsailer to Prince Rupert and is spending the summer in Alaska on his boat. Our cruise was just spur of the moment-- Dianne works with a cruise consultant who e-mailed her a month before the cruise with a heck of bargain. DONE. So, by chance we and my brother and his wife were in Ketichican at the same time. We met up and went out for the day with them on his boat. Believe me, seeing a whale from 5' above sea level and within 100' is quite a sight. Yes, seeing them from the observation deck of the ship is also wonderful (saw over 50 humpbacks and a pod of Orcas along with the usual long list of other wildlife). Only bad news-- the ship's buffet is better than Grant's.
BUT, LET'S NOT TAKE DUB'S THREAD COMPLETELY OFF COURSE. IF INTERESTED IN DISCUSSING ALASKA, PLEASE START A NEW THREAD.
DUB, BACK TO YOU AND YOUR SEARCH FOR YOUR NEXT FORETRAVEL.
Cruised those waters a few years ago with friends on their trawler yacht with very low free-board. Your are right about seeing whales so close you could touch them. Amazing when they would turn on their side and look you in the eye. I will never forget that experience. Ken
