Title: U295 Step Update
Post by: jhardman on June 11, 2018, 02:09:37 am
Pictures, pictures; we want pictures.

I have not yet taken mine apart, but sure need to one of these days.

My understanding of the bottom step is a flat piece of metal with two triangles welded onto the top of it, and a long hinge pop-riveted onto it. There is a fiberglass box (with no top) attached to the metal plate, but how? I assume the moisture gets into the box because the caulking around the edge of the metal is flawed. to get the water out of the box, where do I need to put drain holes?

How thick is that metal plate? How thick was your SS plate? Were you able to salvage your Foretravel step cover?

Thanks,

Trent

Hey Trent,  I took the original step to a great p,ace called Discount Steel and had an awesome CADsmen create the plan for the new stainless steel step. Factory carbon steel weighed 11.2 lbs, new one is 15.4 pounds. About $330for that and the finished product.

I had fiberglass redone at a boat repair facility that does awesome fiberglass work, although I should have tried to learn it myself.  $275 for fiberglass repair to make turkey new.

Gonna' tie two pieces together with button head screws in lieu of rivets. I had two. Small weep holes added as well. Then will reseal with either a marine caulk or the factory windshield caulk.  I'll post pics ASAP.  There are several great threads on the step, several forum members David and Pierce ad Gayle have been Big helps!

If you decide you want one, let me know I'll help you get it!

Take care! Pics soon !

Jhardman, if there's any way you can send cad files or just measurements I could sure use them.  I have a 96 U295 as well.  Thanks, Chuck
