Title: Phoenix flat rate for LOF
Post by: Mike Leary (RIP) on June 19, 2018, 04:59:11 pm
These are the guys that put the beautiful paint job on ours. We're planning a 'max adventure' next spring and, because of the lack of paperwork from the PO (not Brett), I'm researching the "full meal deal". I'll start a list of parts that have been suggested on the forum.
Since labor rate is so high these days, I might be better off getting a brand new air dryer. Here's where we plan to get to:  b^.^d

Best deal for air dryers is a FACTORY (as in the factory that made it) REMAN.

From my records: Replace air dryer as PM with new Bendix  AD-IP -- 4/10.

Since it is quite likely that it is now 8 years old (doubt the guy I sold it to did anything to it)  that is what I would do.

But, verify-- he could have replaced it.

He did not have the coach too long before we bought it. He did do the cute stuff, like the paint, stripes, etc. I know he put tires on, but that's about it, though I have not gone through the binders (gasp) to see if he did anything other than a oil change, which I have no records of, only his word. The search continues, looks like I'm going to be drinking cheap beer to get ready for the upcoming CB donations.  ::)

That's the trouble with flat rate; they'll make some big bucks off me 'cause most of the filters ARE RIGHT THERE, easy access!
Trouble is, most of the shops in the Phoenix area are about the same $$$, and some won't let me supply the parts, cause they miss their mark-up. If I could convince them to do the work for time spent, that would be one thing, They claim the air dryer is a bearcat, it's in a tight location, but it's been out before, so the threads should be easy peasey. I need to make up a parts list anyway, and they said they'll send me a quote when I give them the vin #.  So I'll be able to match up my prices and theirs, and if it's over the top, like the flat rate, I will pass. I don't mind someone making a honest buck, but, geez!  :D

Your Foretravel VIN will do a truck dealer NO GOOD.  I would not give it 5% that he has a way to pull up PN's by Foretravel VIN.

But, you should have PN's for all the routine service parts-- look in your documents from me/previous owner.

How about Speedco?

I'd rather spend CBs at a RV dealer, hoping they would have a little more experience. However, if I had the tools and my back was not so screwed-up, I'd do it myself. Obviously, they don't get many U-240 coaches in for service.

"Power steering & radiator fan filters: $258.00"  "Fuel Filters: $103.20 each"

Mike,

If those are parts prices, they are CRAZY.

The numbers on the two fuel filters and coolant filter should make them very easy to find.

I would buy the secondary fuel filter and the oil filter from Caterpillar-- no more $$ than for off-brand filters.

Mike,
If you're just doing filters and other common stuff, any truck repair facility will do. There's really nothing special about a Foretravel for this kind of thing. Like Dan suggests, Speedco is fine for lube, filters and oil Re the air dryer, I replaced ours in the 225 and it was not difficult so I wouldn't think a shop would have too much time in it. Good luck.

Should be able to find a moonlighting diesel mechanic to work in it where you are some weekend.  You get the (CORRECT) parts.  Ask around at county truck repair facility, etc not at truck repair shops.

Be sure to have all the correct parts and fluids on hand and basically know what needs to be done. If question get it answered here on the Foreforum before he shows up.

The outlet in Phoenix is looking less and less interesting, seems like the 'big box' RV dealers are leaning towards this direction: here's the reply to my question:

At least they were upfront and honest about it. Sometimes you just have to pay your money and take your chances. :)

Sounds like the Phoenix store has had an insurance company on their backs.  When I was in business, you could not have anyone in the shop area that was not a trained employee.

I did stop for service at one small shop that had that rule, but,no waiting room, I told him we wanted to stay in and around the coach. He sized us up, turned around, and said (with that great accent of the guard in 'Hogan's Heroes') "I see nothing."  ^.^d
