Title: Generator buddy plug
Post by: Old phart phred on July 03, 2018, 11:03:36 pm
Most generators tend to be most efficient under close to full load, and somewhere here I seen a thread about a buddy plug where only one of two coaches is running the Genset. I assume the lugs on the genset are big enough or can be somehow modified. The reason I am asking is if I set a 100 amp sub panel at the front of the coach house I can eventually back feed the house and remove the house service entrance and meter which is snaked overhead thru a bunch of trees, add an ATS at the subpanel to get some limited emergency power into the sticks and bricks house. I am pretty sure I have obviously overlooked something on the coach generator side. So go ahead and fire away

We wired a 50-amp buddy plug to the main breaker box to a new breaker installed in an open slot.

Not sure what you mean by more efficient, the less load on the engine the less fuel it will use,if I lose power my plan would be to move to the coach and just run a extension cord to the house if I need power there,if you have natural gas you could always get
a natural gas generator as the natural gas usually stays on during a power outage.

Phred, cover the roof of your new coach house with solar panels and have a Tesla battery bank.

Kilowatts per gallon of fuel is what he is referring to.

Kansas is not a solar panel friendly state due to mother nature hurling hail from the heavens on a fairly regular basis. A couple of years ago a church that I drive by put up a fairly good sized array on their sloped roof, it's now gone. Roofers are always in the feast or famine mode.
