I just bought a new Chevy Colorado Z71 4x4 as a toad for our upcoming retirement in July 2019. I comes standard with Apple Car Play and the recently announced IOS 12 coming in fall of 2018 will allow me to use Google Maps and Waze navigational apps in addition to Apple maps. I really like Apple Car play and it occurred to me that I could replace my 20 year old Pioneer stereo with a new Pioneer Single Din with Apple Play and a motorized 7 inch screen in the 98 U270. I could then use it for navigation switching between Google maps, Apple Maps and Waze as the situation arose. It also has an input for a backup camera, so I could double down for a new hi res color backup camera. I could leave the existing black and white monitor for the monitoring system. I have a Nuvi 1300 with lifetime maps that can be a backup for those times when I can't get a cell signal.

I have the iPhone version of tire minder on my phone, so it would also serve for my tire pressure monitoring. Cost of the new Pioneer stereo is not much different from a high end Nuvi. What am I missing in this scenario? It would also give me hands-free blue tooth phone calling.
I keep an old stand alone GPS running all the time, mostly to get approximate arrival times for lunch, campgrounds, etc especially if meeting friends at restaurants, campgrounds.
Much better to buy a stereo receiver that will duplicate your smart phone screen on the flip out screen. Pioneers will do this with Waze. That way, you get the latest map updates. Stand alone GPSs are like dinosaurs in my opinion, nice if you already have one but not worth the expenditure for a new one.
Pioneers are pretty easy to read while driving. Make sure to buy one with HD FM.
Most of the time, we use an iPhone running all the time to navigate in new locations for us. Many Android and some iPads have a built in GPS receiver. With a MiFi connection, many nav apps will have other features enabled with an internet connection. Usually, y better half will have our TAB S running with the MiFi on to research restaurants in the next city or campgrounds ahead.

That looks like a great solution for a single din. I sure like Apple Car Play on my Wrangler and my Chevy pickup and I completely agree on the anticipation of Waze and Google working with them.
Pierce, I've got a Pioneer double din in the coach but something has happened (update?) so that now I can't get it to work with my I-phone 7. It won't go past the caution screen where you click OK at the bottom. The OK isn't highlighted and doesn't respond. Waiting for a reply form Pioneer. It was great when it worked.
We seem to do it almost like Pierce does it. I have the radio with gps but I seem to keep the screen on for the backup camera all the time so I can watch the tahoe behind, very seldom use it for the gps now. I use TomTom on my tablet, (get 4 map updates per year and have it connected to mobley so I get traffic updates) has a side tab that shows how far to next gas station and rest stops.
Wife uses her phone to use google maps and waze so we can compare with what TomTom has. If we get two that say the same we pretty much go that way. She also spends time on her phone doing researching
Wonder if it might be a iPhone update causing the problem? I hate it when things are working perfectly and suddenly
there is a glitch. Might be a post about that on some forum. We still use the turn of the century TomTom. I ordered the regular model but a 2Gb version came with all of North America and Europe installed. Some new road changes catch us out occasionally. We also purchased Mexico from TomTom years ago for iOS.

That's for the maps for iOS/Android. Our stand alone TomTom GPS stuck on the side window has much smaller files as it does not have the nice details the smart phone/tablet version has with the 3D, etc.
I looked at the TomTom maps for both our Android Tab S and iPad but I didn't like the trial of only about 60 miles. Seemed very short compared to some other apps. Here was going to be difficult. Maps.me allows you do download just a portion of a country so with a slow connection, it's very convenient. It worked well.
