Title: Direct TV scam
Post by: Sven and Kristi on July 26, 2018, 02:07:32 pm
While traveling through Oregon, I received a call from a Direct TV rep. letting me know that we were being upgraded with Starz and Encore at no cost as appreciation for our business.  I had them verify that this was not a short term promotion and that there would be no additional charge.  On our return, Kristi checked our credit charges and Direct TV account and found that they charged us $21+ for this service.  We were able to get it sorted out with billing and I  made another call to a supervisor to let them know I did not appreciate the deception (lie) and if it was not policy, they might want to investigate.  I was told that they do not have promotions for free upgrades and that perhaps it was someone masquerading as a Direct TV rep.  Not likely, since they asked for no information and the supervisor was not able to tell me how they managed to give us access to the channels (we never watched) and increase our billing.
Just wanted to pass this along, in case anyone else was contacted recently.

Don't even get me started.. Some broad calls from Bangladesh that can't even pronounce my name, never mind I don't want to get started.

You misunderstood them.  There would be no additional charge (past the $21.00 they are going to charge you on your bill)

Usually it takes something on the order of " I wonder what Dish can do for us?" From personal experience it gets their attention.

I have received the Stars special in the past for 1 month. They didn't charge us, but I canceled before the month was up. They hope you won't because you forget (not saying you did).
The movies all stunk, just like all the one's on HBO and Cinemax, when they have the free weekend.
When people ask me which one is better, Dish or Directv (Because as a dealer in the past I sold both). I tell them it's the worst of 12 evils.

We streamed a lot of video, using Amazon Prime and Netflix, which we prefer to cable or satellite.  The only problem is with wifi broadband at campgrounds and the amount of data it uses on our phones.  These issues should be cleared up in the near future as they have with similar issues.

We stream DirecTV Now, Amazon Prime Video, PBS, CBS and much more, usually > 300 GB/month with our unlimited data on ATT Home Base.  It works almost everywhere and is 1/2 the price of DirecTV by Satellite (which we have also).  Streaming is the way of the future (for a few years anyway until something new comes along).

I wonder how much it costs. per month for enough data to stream video, etc. as a full timer?

Jim, Unlimited ATT data is $110/month.  Devices connect to the plan for $20/mo.  DirecTV Now is $25/month and uses no data fromyour plan.  Our Homebase was free.  We normally get data at 50-65 Mbps down and around 40 up.  Some places slower.  In one  place in two years not at all.  We got rid of DSL, Comcast, a land line and saved more than this costs us now.

Plans change all the time.  We live in a smaller town so the ATT store is sometimes not so busy. I got to know a rep there and he worked with me to get what we needed.  That was his goal, to make it work for us.  Whatever he sold us came after.

We got our Homebase in St George UT while on the road.  The manager knew what we were look8ng for, how to set it up and had one in stock.  An hour later we were out the door.  You get some fast talking 22 yr old who only wants to make a buck, pass him by and look for someone else.

Roku.  We use it at home piggybacking on my sister-in-laws subscription to MHZ and Acorn.  Just about everything is posted on YouTube as well for free.  It steams just great but some up-loaders have better quality than others.  One of our favorites from back in the UK is "Time Team"  Bunch of archeologists do proper 3 day digs on mostly ancient sites.  Ran on TV for 20 years and 148 episodes.  Always end up at the local pub at the end of the day.
