Title: Residential Referigerator
Post by: Don Hays on August 08, 2018, 12:43:36 pm
When we store the coach for 3-4 months we remove the foods that will spoil and kill the power to the fridge. Is this good, bad or indifferent to the fridge? The reason I do this is because I've previously lost a leg on the incoming power while in storage. It was the leg that powers the battery charger so the refrigerator pulled the batteries down over night. When I found it, the batteries were completely dead. Any thoughts from the experts about turning off the fridge while in storage?

Two of these and 2 boxes of baking soda and check/replace  every month or two.
One in freezer and one in fridge side.

Yes, plus spray a bit of Lysol Disinfectant Spray in even if the door(s) are going to be left open. Especially important in areas of high humidity. Pull the gaskets aside with your fingers and give them a spray too. Forgot to do that on ours and now there is a bit of mold that's hard to get out of the cracks. Box of soda if closed.

No problem leaving the refrigerator off while in storage.  And better to leave the refrigerator/freezer doors open.

And, if storing in a humid climate (yes, like S Texas), set up a small house-type dehumidifier on the kitchen counter draining into the sink/gray tank.  Set humidity at 50%. Be sure it is plugged into an outlet NOT powered by the inverter.

Our previous coach had a duel fuel Dometic and we always turned it off when in storage and we always left the doors open. I'v also left these doors open. I like the Lysol and baking soda tip. I'v heard that some fridges and freezers can be finicky if cycled off and on for periods of time. This one is a Whirlpool. Thanks All...

We turn off and empty our electric fridge and made a temp bracket to keep door open a few inches.

We do much the same with our Samsung.  After a week out two we are OK with closing it if it is dry.  In humid locations I would leave it open.  If we are storing it for a while in winter (in MN) we close it.  A box of baking soda keeps the inside fresh and when you replace it dump the old baking soda down the kitchen drain to clean that.  We don't use any chemicals to clean the inside, just soap and water.
