Title: Steering KLUNK.
Post by: speedbird1 on August 13, 2018, 10:43:17 am
One for the experts.  My 2001 40ft U320 has been used very little since I had the steering box re-done by Redhead and the coach re-aligned, but on almost full lock, Left or Right I sometimes get a hefty Klunk that can be heard and felt through the steering???

Any ideas.

Did you check the setting on the relief plungers?  If incorrect, you might be hitting the hard mechanical stops - not good.

See link below.  Scroll down to the section on "Relief Plungers" for lots of good info:

Make certain that the steering stops (the physical ones on the steering knuckles) have a 1/8" clearance at full cut angle.

If the steering box cut angle adjustments have not been done (yes, assuming you have the manually adjusted Sheppard box, not the automatic one) metal to metal with the several thousand PSI operating the steering gear can give a clunk.

Thank you guys,

I will check on that in the morning with the shop that re-installed it after the rebuild.

You are the best.
