Title: Coretec floor install
Post by: Green99 on August 13, 2018, 05:15:47 pm
I am considering Coretec  flooring for our coach and was wandering if anyone had experience installing.  Would appreciate any pointers.
Thanks.

No first hand information.  Is installed floating, so a little more complex installation but looks like a good product.

You will need to use quarter round affixed to the wall to cover the 1/4" gap and insure that the floor is free to move.

Have you verified that the manufacturer approves it for RV installation (much larger temperature and movement range than home installation).

Read the instructions carefully. We are still looking for something that will deal with sub zero cold (before we head aouth) in the winter.  Probably cork would work but we are just not convinced we want cork.

From the installation instructions ...

COREtec floor covering is an interior product and must be stored/installed in a temperature-controlled interior environment, maintained between 55 and 85 degrees F or 13°-29°C.

I installed floating coretec in mine. First time installing for me so it took some practice and trial and error and as Wolfe said, you will need to use quarter round for the border.  My coach spends the winter in Florida so no issues with storing it in the cold.

DW and I are happy with the result.

Thanks to all for possible concerns.  I will contact manufacturer with these.
I have to say the residential warranty is very good.  Lifetime.  10 years Commercial.

Jerry,

We looked at the  Coretec  flooring when we were in the market and decided against it due to the uncertainty of how it would do with the temp swings in an RV.  We ended you going with engineered 5/8" thick Bamboo instead.  I know Bamboo isn't for everyone but we are pleased with so far.

I installed cork flooring in the bath and bedroom of a previous Newell.  I used a colored caulk to fill in the gap along the walls.  It was flexible enough for the floor to expand and looked nice.  In the bathroom I put a heated pad beneath it.  This was about 8 years ago and the current owner is still using it.  We like cork so much we installed it in our S&B in the bedroom.  It is warmer, quieter, and softer than other floors, but if we had a pet not sure if we would use cork.  It does self heal but claws could tear it up more than other floors.
When we replace the carpet in our FT we'll probably put cork.

After speaking with the manufacturer I will look further for flooring possibilities.  They would not recommend for RV use due to temp and other issues.  This flooring would probably work really well for full timer.
Possible choice might be Mannington Adura.

Adura has great choices for color and texture but the same low and high temp limits so it does't seem like a good choice for us.  The aqua hot on electric will keep the coach above 32° even when it hits a really cold snap.  $3-5 per day.  A few electric heaters and a fan might be a bit cheaper and less wear and tear on the AH.

Adura Prime and Rigid has no temp restrictions on them.  I was actually looking for something with less weight than tile.  It is looking like more research before I make a decision.

PDF on COREtec plus warranty said below 32 degrees Fahrenheit product needs to be glued.  Other references to temperature range stated are for stored/installation temperatures, not use.  Ideal install temperature is 70 degrees.  Google search for COREtec plus warranty pdf to see.  When you call a mfg you are often talking to a min wage individual just reading what you read, can make same mistakes.

I am planning to install Coretec click togeather the next month or so, will post pictures.

Not covered warranty damage: "8. Damage to floor caused by flooring that is installed using the floating method that subsequently is heated to
temperature above 140° F (60° C) or is exposed to temperatures below 32° F (0° C). Flooring exposed to these
conditions must be installed using the glue down method in order to maintain warranty coverage."
....and so good click together down to 32 degrees and good below that if glued to floor with their recommended glue and instructions.

Floor pieces glued to each other or to the sub-floor?

Brett, it means glued to the sub floor.

Jack, Thanks for the info. on warranties.  I check it out and have to say it makes much more sense.  Install at temps from 55 to 85 makes sense, but to say it cant be exposed to temps below 55 was hard to believe.  There are many reasons home temps could be below 55  Power outages etc, etc.

I know this is an old post but I gain much knowledge when I stumble on an old post that has updated information.

I installed CoreTec Plus XL in my 1997 Winnebago.  It was a weathered pine look.  I have to say I was pretty impressed with it.  It installed well and looks fantastic.  I realize the warranty may be void (warranties are generally worth the paper they are written on) using it in a motorhome.  While I generally always have my unit hooked up and climatized, there were times over the late summer and winter that it was not and I saw no issues.  Since it is dimensionally stable (will not expand or contract under normal conditions) I cut it tight to the walls and cabinets.  And I have seen no issue to date.  I did not want a quarter round as an extra dust collector.  And I will tell you that it went over some rough subfloor conditions, including the rough metal cab area.  Really rough.  And it worked like a charm.  I was beyond impressed with its ability to span over terrible subfloor conditions.

We are having a new floor installed next week. We were looking at core tech but were told that we needed glue down vinyl, that the lock together floating floor didn't work as well. So we shopped for the mannington Adura. The DW found a pattern that she liked so we're good to go. Dropping the coach off Friday to have a subfloor issue fixed then the new floor will go in.

There are as many opinions as there are anything.  All I know is 4,000 miles later and all is fine with our floating Coretec install.  But disclaimer - We have no slide, so that is a significant point to consider.  I'd love to see the Adura after it's done.

Keith, You never got to see my coach. I used Karndean, a product I had never heard of in all my years of commercial construction. Andy 2 and my buddy Pete had both installed it in their FT's. Looked good. On the recommendation of my flooring subcontractor, and knowing that he was correct, after I "floated out" the imperfections and any indentations on the substrata,  I installed 1/4" underlayment, and filled any seams and sanded smooth. I didn't want ANYTHING to telegraph through the tile. I got on line, found a good supplier and bought extra tile and THEIR glue. Take your time to lay it out correctly. I used a torch to soften the tile before cutting, but you can buy an inexpensive heat gun at Harbor Freight, which will be easier to use. If you have a slide, THAT is where you will need to get creative. I removed the plastic guide that was under the angle iron and glued 3/8" felt on it. It seems to work, but I have encountered problems with the locking pins on the slide, which may be related to the floor installation. WE LOVE our Karndean. Highly recommended.
Now we are looking for a product to replace the carpeting in the bedroom. The pooch got to our brand new carpeted replacement, two weeks after spending lotsa money. Bad dog.

Glenn,  We found the mannington adura vinyl planks and a pattern we liked. At the mothership now for some repairs and floor. Can't wait to get it back! Wish we would have had time to see yours, maybe next time.. that is one of the reasons why we don't have a dog!!!

No, will find out tomorrow if it will be ready Tuesday, if not it will be the Tuesday after Memorial Day before I can go get it..  we had to have the slide pulled to repair some plywood under the tiles. The message I got Friday was the floor repair was complete and the new floors were in and the slide was being put back in, he didn't know if they finished or not. I will be on the phone first thing Monday morning.. if I remember correctly this is what we went with. I will post pics when I get it back in a new thread.

The coach was not going to be ready so I won't go get it till next tuesday. It's a bummer but better than them hurrying and half assing something..  I will post pics in a new thread..  On a positive note since I'm not going to nac I'm gonna ride with Rudy on some aquahot service calls. Should be an interesting informative day!
