Title: Minor Fiberglass Repair
Post by: Walkerfam7 on August 15, 2018, 02:39:54 pm
I've got a small rock peck on the roof out of the fiberglass.  Anyone have any thoughts as to something that I could safely use to fill this?

Gator Patch UV cure fiberglass reinforced. Sets in minutes makes a permanent... (https://www.gator-guards.com/product/gator-patch-2/)

I have no experience with this but it looks like it might work. Can cut to size and bonds with fiberglass.

I've repaired similar dings on a boat with 3M 5200.  Won't look perfect but it's on the roof.

Get a set of 5 or 10 minute epoxy, clear or white.  When the roof is dry, mix equal parts of the epoxy and the hardener well and then put a dab on the chip just big enough to fill it.  Let it set.  This will seal it up and the surrounding gel coat and is good enough as a permanent repair.  If you ever do a more extensive repair this is compatible with fiberglass materials and polyester resins.  If you use a sealant or silicone it is not compatible and has to get ground out for a permanent repair.

This works well on rock chips on the front end as well.

Also marine-tex from a boat store.  Only need the small 2oz one:

I've used this in the past to repair the inside of one of my bay doors where the latch is attached.  It was superb!  Dried very hard, easy to sand and drill to remount the baydoor latch.

Thank you all so much for your help!  Sounds like I need to get some Marine Tex!  Good thing we are currently staying in a beach town on lake Michigan and boat stores are plentiful. You guys are great!  Love this forum!

I've used white gelcoat repair for a similar issue. Never tried Marinetex but it looks like a good choice as well.

The Marine-Tex looks fine but for a small chip in the gel coat on the roof a small white epoxy tube will only cost a few bucks and do exactly the same thing.  The smallest 2 oz Marine-Tex at Amazon is about $15.  At a boat store it will be $25 or more.

Devcon epoxy is another very good product. For me it's just a little better than Marine Tex.
