Title: 10k Isuzu genset - OK running the genset with all insulation removed?
Post by: rwhoffmantx on August 29, 2018, 03:12:01 pm
Hi all!

10k Isuzu with remote radiator - Any issues other than increased noise and possibly heat into forward cab wall?  I did not want to jam up the gen head and old material was not operationally safe.  We are heading out for 3 weeks on Saturday - I've watched the temps cycle properly for a 165 thermostat, replaced the run cap as pm and replaced the belt.  I also removed the holding tank/guard to reweld the top forward bracket and replaced the 5/8 hose and clamps.  We will be traveling from DFW area to Colorado so roof air will be used in transit.  Any operational issues or safety issues?  There is a gap between the genhead inlet snorkel and the inlet portal now but I have removed all material to limit free material injestion.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Personally, I would use it and not think twice about it.  Replace it when you can for the reasons you stated but shouldn't be a problem.

With ours, the insulation is a fire hazard. Much safer without the black foam. Drive it.

I removed all of mine several years ago. Honestly, I couldn't tell any appreciable noise difference.  Plus no more of that nasty foam going everywhere.

I had to repair front gen set door and when I pulled it off I removed the black foam. I then cleaned up and did my repair and glassed in the driving light holes...I then put dynamat all over the door...looks really nice and it's quiet.

Today I logged about an hour on the road with the naked box configuration and didn't notice much more noise. But I swear the lead shielding or what ever the dense layer was composed seems to be missed.  The gen is running smooth as ever but deeper vibration cycles seem to be radiating more - not bad but different.  Makes sense and supports the original design  spec.  We'll see how annoying it gets after a days drive.  My biggest concern is that it might turn my luxo lounger seat into a giant motel quarter bed and lull me off to sleep...  ;)

I plan on tackling the cavern in the back (still intact but splitting) and finish the gen box when I get back.  I loved the pictures shared by another member who powder coated the frame, pan and slides and plan to duplicate.  Just need to return from the next wonderful trip to Colorado and get busy!

Thanks all for sharing your insights -  this board has been so instrumental in building my knowledge of and appreciation for these fine machines.    Off for 3 weeks of free air conditioning in the mountains and the Meeker Classic Sheep Dog Championship!

If I put Dynamat  or Fatmax on the inside of the Quiet Box, would I gain anything by also putting Dynamat or Fatmax on the outside of the box? Would a different product be better on the outside?
