I am thinking of installing one since I do have room for the depth and it is "Energy Star Rated". Will it go thru the removed window? I will be posting the take out that works fine on the fore sale part of this forum on Friday, Sept 6th.
Jack,
MOT installed the 17.5 version, which MOT recommended. We looked at the 21.5, but it looked too big in the showroom. They did bring it through the dining room window. After seeing how big the 17.5 is after installation, I do not think the larger one would have fit; it also might have interfered with the narrow pantry shelf.
MOT's work (Keith and his team) did a great job, especially the finishing work. It looked like it came with the unit.
MOT did provide a strap across the fridge doors, but the freezer door opened up on the first big turn. We used a bungee cord between the two upper doors and the freezer handle on our last trip. Will make a wooden slotted (upside down) "U" board before our next trip.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Trent
Jack,
The larger fridge depth (with doors removed) is 30", compared to 24" on the smaller model. Even if you do have enough aisle space to utilize the deeper model, I think it would be a real hassle to get it into the coach. Our RF197 Samsung (a earlier version of the smaller fridge) was "inserted" through the removed window opening over the couch. They had to take the doors off to make it fit, and even then it was pretty tight.
I have read about removing a front windshield to install a fridge, but that seems kinda extreme to me. The smaller size french door fridge stores a good quantity of food - more than enough for the two of us. If you desire more freezer space, you could consider a separate freezer unit mounted in a storage bay.
Pics in post linked below of our Samsung going through the side window (David Flanagan's crew at FOT):
Our Days Spent in Remodel Shop (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=22542.msg172507#msg172507)
The standard depth model at 34", without the handles, is about 6" deeper than the counter depth. I don't recall if there was that much clearance through the window or not but it would be easy enough to measure. I'd be more concerned about the fridge sticking out into the kitchen an extra 6".
Yet another Samsung conversion (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=29453.msg252394#msg252394)
This was in the coach when I bought it. 22.6 Seems to fit fine to us. The door lock I made out of one of the DW's cutting boards.
That Frigidaire is also counter depth. It looks like it gets the extra space by being 3 1/2 wider, which wouldn't have fit in the existing hole on my coach. Looks like a better option if you have the space for it without major cabinet modifications.
Have these little Samsungs been better than the full size? I dont get a lot of positive hits for the House fridges.
Ditto - not enough space in our coach either. But it is a very interesting option. In Craneman's coach they even managed to retain the pantry space next to fridge. Very nice installation! I wonder if that model is still offered?
We used the RF197, about 19 cu ft. Without the doors it will go through the side window, I doubt a non-counter depth one will.
The RF197 is 32" wide and in a 36" space it gives you some options for additional storage. Very handy space. There was a 36" wide countertop depth as I recall.
Another Samsung installed (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=22462.0)
Keep the latches simple. This is all you need.
Residential Refrigerator (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=28081.msg232169#msg232169)
More than four years on ours and zero issues. Plenty big enough for us. The three door French Door model is a good choice. We run ours on a small, inverter all,the time. It takes less that 10% more power than the JC-Refrigeration electric conversion unit with twice the volume.
Better is a relative term. Ours has been on 24/7 for the 4+ years since it was installed. Absolutely zero problems. When we aren't traveling we use it for extra food storage. Hasn't failed us (yet), knock wood.
The door latches don't get any easier than ours.
"The door latches don't get any easier than ours.". No they don't but you have to put it somewhere when it is not in use and some of this type of door holders have scratched up the doors. DWMYH. Whatever works for you is OK.
First picture, made of Teflon, no scratches just drop it in.
It is not a competition, if it works for you, fine. Each of us gets to choose our own way. Options are good.
We use a velcro strap around the handles, and wrap that around the steering wheel while parked. We've had the doors come open while driving too many times. Whatever you choose to use, a reminder to use it is a good idea.
Agree, no matter how convenient it is if you don't use it you're in trouble.
I am finding the depth of the two refrigerators with the door removed to be 24.31 for the 17.5 cu ft. Samsung 3 door, and 30.47 inches for the 21.8. I do not know the size of the cutout for the side window to put it thru. Does anyone out there know that dimension?[/color]
My rough estimate of the height of this window cutout is 27 inches, thus removing the posibility of the 21.8 cu ft as I do not want to remove the windshield. Any more information is appreciated. I will follow up with pictures and information of what I did before the end of this month, Sept 2018.
I found out the dimension for the height of the side window cut out is 27 1/2.
Jack, measure the inside of the window frametop to bottom. The actual hole will be about a 1/4" bigger. The 19.7 cu ft Samsung went through the hole with some room to spare. The LP refrigerator went out OK as well but it weighs almost twice what the Samsung did.
You may have to do some rearranging of wires and plumbing at the bottom back of the refrigerator space to get it in as far as it will go. The front face of the Samsung (no doors) got to about 1/2" - 5/8" of the cabinet face frame on mine. We did this ourselves (with some help with the in and out). Not too hard to do.
If you have a sliding door nearby make sure the refrigerator doors clear it.
Old refrig coming out.
Roger
Here's a pic of ours going in at FT from two summers ago. Looked tight.
Honestly ... even if it does fit, I cannot believe that the small increase in capacity will be of that much benefit. Think about it! Interior dry storage is MUCH more useful to you than a bit of extra in the fridge. A bit of broom storage, another can rack, extra room in existing cupboards ... all a huge bonus whan you are doing this remodel. I was totally and completely happy with the counter depth fridge when we did our remodel. I chose a French Door model, and counter depth was needed to extend the freezer door completely open. I would never recommend the Side by Side. They are very inconvenient.

My problem is the 30.47 depth with door removed to go thru the window (approx height of window is 27.5), the other choice is to remove the front window which I am not wanting to do. Monday I will make up my mind.
From other's post I will only loose a little space under the refrigerator. Thank you all. Mainly I wanted the "Energy Star" rating on the larger 21.8 Samsung. Pretty sure installer will vote for 17.5 Samsung.

My RF197 uses just under 70 watt average to run.
The 17.5 cu ft RF18HFENBSR/US looks like it uses about the same energy. You can use it without the ice maker, there is setting on the control panel to shut it off.
We bought the extended warranty, it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Speaking of ice maker:
That is the only problem that I have had with my Samsung 17.5. Normally, it works fine, and makes a lot of good quality ice. Every once in a while, it does not start making ice again after I empty the tray (I like the cubes, so use it as my ice maker for my home fridge). It only seems to happen after I remove and reinsert the tray/bucket. It is almost like I am not reacquiring a sensor or something. Called Samsung and they told me about the reset button under the ice unit. Hold it for about eight seconds and you can hear the ice cubes falling out of the maker; sometimes I can hear the water flowing into the ice maker.
After my last ice bucket emptying, it did not start making ice again. Pushed the reset button and I can hear the sound of a screw drive turning, but not ice falling. I am beginning to think that I have some frozen ice that is blocking the emptying procedure. It is not easy to access the ice maker as it is mounted to the top of the freezer section. If you have the 17.5 unit, you can pull the freezer door open far enough to remove the freezer drawer (impossible with the deeper unit). You still have to get over the front freezer door to get at the ice maker unit. The only way I can see to thaw the freezer is to remove my shore power AND turn the inverter off.
I will try to reach Samsung tomorrow to see if they have any further suggestions. Meanwhile, have any of the rest of you been confronted with this problem? If so, and the reset button does not solve the problem, how would you proceed to start making ice cubes again?
It's still hot in Oklahoma,
Trent
Trent, I've run across the same issue with not making ice after removing the tray also( at least 4 times). So far, all I've had to do is push the reset button and then it works. We shut it off after we get home from any trip and don't turn it on till we leave for our next trip.
rbark,
How do you turn it off?
Thanks,
Trent
There is a button on the top panel to shut it off. When it is off a small no ice bucket symbol lights up.
We added a 120v switch to the power to the outlet where the refrigerator plugs in. These refrigerators have no off switch. You can set it to a no cooling display mode where the lights still work. The only way to shut it off is to cut the power.
On sale now at Costco $949.
My "it" may have been unclear. I want to shut off the whole system so the ice maker can thaw out, in case excess ice in the wrong place is the problem. We weren't smart enough to put a switch in the power line, but I could probably just turn off the circuit breaker. That should be a lot easier than removing shore power and turning off the inverter, which had been my first thought.
Trent
As for a temp "stay put" for the fridge doors.
Use a rubber spoon for the french doors and commercial velcro for the freezer slide out..
Will make the "Horseshoe" when I get time.
The issue with using a "bungie cord" holding the freezer slide out closed is that when you lift the freezer handle there is little push pins that force the door open an eighth of an inch or so..therefore it is not fully closed ... think frost in the freezer.
An old post of mine, re: "Demo Mode" on the smaller unit:
Trent, the inverter circuit that the refrigerator is connected to also powers several other things. That is the reason for a separate switch for the outlet. In my coach I chased down the 120 v wiring and split that circut so that from the refrigerator forward (overhead electronics, tv etc.) are powered by a small inverter of by use of a Double Pole Double Throw switch from the big inverter or land line or generator. Running on the small inverter all of the electronics are like they are on a big uninteruptible power supply. Never any issues with landling/generator/inverter switching.
Decided on Item # 652269 Model # RF20HFENBSR from Lowes, $1079 with 10% military discount. Samsung 19.43-cu ft French Door Refrigerator with Ice Maker (Stainless steel) will make it thru the side window with an inch to spare. Pictures by October 5th.
The door ajar alarm is nice.
To each his own but why would you need a fridge that big I wonder....
If the coach is only for 2 people.
If I needed bigger capacity I would get a Engel and put it in the basement for that occasional need.
At home with 2 kids and two full time jobs, we need the capacity, but on the road, just the two of us... don't need it or want it.
Plus those big residential fridges suck up the juice, and for boondocking, I like 12 volt refrigeration. We have a 12 volt marine refrig that works fine for us. At least at this point. Will get a 80 liter Engel at some point for additional freezer space.
Again not knocking your choice. To each his own.
We have both the Samsung in the coach and the Engel in the basement. DW keeps the Samsung full of food and I keep the Engel full of champagne and other adult beverages in support of the Samsung. When we are on the road we eat just like at home.
John
We love to eat and cook. Our original Dometic is large enough for us. Before a trip we'll cook and vacuum pack and fill the freezer. That will usually last us a month or 2, possibly more since I just removed the non-working ice maker. I also have a 40 quart 12vdc Dometic freezer if we need more freezer space.
Now when we full timed we enjoyed having the much larger Amana sidexside.
UPDATE:
I think I have "fixed" my icemaker "problem."
DW comes back from checking the freezer and says, does the water pump have to be on to make ice?"
DUH!! She turned the water pump back on, and now we have lots of ice!
Hope this helps another frustrated owner,
Trent
When FOT suggested a Samsung (R19 I think) I did reviews and they were not good, so I located a counter depth GE Fridge and matching Microwave that had better reviews, purchased from home depot and shipped to them. Plus for us it had 4 options for finishes. We chose slate black, which does not show fingerprints and has a matte finish. To each his own, but we're tired of S/S, been there done that. (a Few Times)
Now after 4 Months, no complaints!

Roger, yes the door ajar alarm will be nice. I appreciate all the comments as I near the installation date next Tuesday. I've learned a few things I didn't know when I started this post. 1) Best to block/close up at least the bottom outside vent to prevent freeze ups of the ice maker line in winter situations. 2) Several residential users have talked about turning off the inverter and refrigerator at night when they sleep and are not opening the doors similar to the following. I like that he added the timer which will be so easy to do.

I did some extensive research into overnight power usage and temperature drop a few years back. I found that turning it off overnight saved a lot of power, but also that the temp rose too much for my liking. I solved that by putting the refer on a 24 hour timer that shuts it off around bedtime but turns it on again for a half hour during the middle of the night. It still reduced the power consumption significantly but kept the temperatures where I felt comfortable with them. I still use that same technique when boon docking."
The Samsung refrigerator I selected has "twin cooling". What is the twin cooling system?
The Twin Cooling System controls the refrigerator and freezer independently with two separate
evaporators and precise electronic control. This brings: superior energy savings
An adequate amount of cool air is provided in each compartment independent of the other. Temperature
sensors and microcomputers detect which compartment needs cooling and enables the refrigerator
and freezer to use power only when their respective compartments need cool air.
ideal temperature and humidity preservation
Because cool air in the refrigerator does not travel to the freezer, the refrigerator compartment
maintains a high level of humidity. The separate evaporators allow each compartment to maintain its
ideal temperature.
no mixing of odors
Since cool air does not travel through the same duct to reach the two compartments, odors are
isolated.
So an occasional opening of the refrigerator at night along with the timed turn on for 30 min should "help me thru the night". Others set the freezer at 0 degrees and said in the morning the freezer is still at 10 degrees, which would be fine for me till morning when either the solar kicks in or the proper reserve in my batteries is there, or my gen can to be cycled.
My batteries are 3 8D AGMS for approx 750 AH of storage, my solar is two 60 cell 280 watt LG panels for 560 watts with a Morninstar PS-MPPT-40 controller, my inverter/charger is a Xantrex Freedom SW2000. I'll weigh in on the future for my need for another approx 300 watt panel on the roof, which would necessitate updating to a TS-MPPT-60 after I start looking at my data for the current 12V system with the new Samsung residential refrigerator I purchased from Lowes, two weeks ago for $1079 with free delivery. I will be installing a battery monitor along with the refrigerator and so I plan to log my ah use and report in a future update.
Jack,
You have a good plan based on lots of research, which should lead to a successful installation.
We have the "twin cooling " feature on our Samsung. It seems to be transparent in operation, but works as advertised. Never had a odor problem or cooling problem in our 4 years of operation. We always leave the temp settings at the recommended -2 degrees and 38 degrees, and it never varies, no matter if on shore power or running on inverter.
To help reduce energy consumption, we use two of the handy features on the control panel. We let the ice maker fill up the ice bin, then we turn it "OFF" until the ice is used up. We also never use the ice maker when dry comping - instead we just buy a bag of ice (as required) and pour it in the bin. The ice maker uses a lot of power to heat the trays before it dumps, so having it off most of the time is supposedly a big power saver. There is also a "Energy Saver" button, which as I understand it controls the power to a heating element in the door seals. This heating element is supposed to keep condensation from forming around the door openings. We have always had this feature turned "ON" since day one, and have never noticed any moisture around the doors.
We have never felt the need to use the "Power Freeze" or the "Power Cool" buttons. Using them, I assume, would increase power draw.
Hope your installation goes smoothly! Keep us updated with lots of photos!
Hey Jack, Chuck is doing what we do mostly. We don't use the ice maker at all, be sure to figure out how to shut it off with the panel buttons. It remembers to stay off even if the power is off for a while but not for a couple months. We tried turning the refrig off over night but temps rose too much. Try setting the freezer to it highest setting (+8° on ours) and 40° on the refrig section. You will probably save the most energy by running the refrigerator on a small inverter and turning the big inverter off. A Kill-A-Watt meter is a good way to measure actual use. Total battery use is spread across lots of things in the coach and that makes isolating the refrigerator hard.
I have one of these. You need wifi with it.
Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug w/Energy Monitoring by TP-Link - Control your Devices... (https://amazon.com/gp/product/B0178IC5ZY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
It does the same monitoring task that the Kill-A-Wall does but you can monitor it from you phone or tablet. And you can shut off the refrigerator with it. And you can program over night on/off periods.
Our outside side vent hole has a slide up insulated panel that seals it up pretty well. I removed the screen in the roof top vent and put in a vent that I can open and close. Open when warm summer, closed in winter.
Thank you Chuck and Roger, useful info. I got r done with a RF20HFENBSR 19.43 cu ft Samsung. Also wired in Victron 712 battery monitor from AM Solar and ran plug, 12/2 Romex type from battery compartment to refrigerator for future stand alone inverter. I plan to watch how I'm using the system and possibly add a stand alone Xantrex Freedom X 1000 inverter with an amp draw of .4 compared to 3 amps, than my current Xantrex SW2012. Since .4 is 13.33 % of 3 amps, this would be considerable.
Next year also might add 3rd approx 300 watt solar panel. However, I believe replacing carpet with vinyl wood plank floor will be first. Thank you to all for the info. I, and my wife are extremely pleased with the upgrade from Lowes and the install by Davis Cabinets of Junction City, Oregon. Extremely quiet, quietest I've ever owned. Installed easily thru 27 1/2 high side window. I read allot of the shortcomings prior to buying, reviews etc., none were offsetting to the advantages of this unit.
Samsung Limited Warranty is as follows: One (1) year Parts and Labor on Refrigerator Five (5) years Parts and Labor on sealed Refrigeration system only which includes the compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier, and connection tubing. Ten (10) years Parts and Five (5) years Labor on Digital Inverter Compressor. Thus I did not buy the Lowes extended warranty yet, I have 30 days to buy their extended warranty for 5 yrs for $169. I need to do more reading on that. Since the cost to remove and replace the refrigerator might be $1,000 to $1,500 if it failed, and Davis Cabinets said they have not had a Samsung fail, I'm leaning towards no extended warranty from Lowes.

Looks nice, Jack. We did get the extended warranty but so far all is good. When we have had an operating question Samsung Customer Service has been good.
Get a Kill-a-Watt meter or a TP Link power monitoring wifi connected plug. These will help you know how much your refrigerator is actually using as you use it. That will help you size a smaller inverter properly.
I've found Samsung's customer support excellent on all their products. I also got the Victron 712 battery moniter upon the advice of Rodger at AM solar. It has built in bluetooth, using a smartphone , for monitoring usage. Later I can report on the difference between the Xantrex Freedom X 1000 and the Xantrex SW2012 for stand by amps, specs .4 and 3 respectively and also the Samsung.
Has anyone purchased a residential refrigerator with water and ice in the door? We had that in our Mobil Suites fifth wheel and loved it.
I think most people that have replaced there fridge have ice and water in the door models. It would be very hard to find a counter depth model that would not have that.
Ours does not have an in-the-door water and ice dispenser, something we specifically did not want. Looks like Jack's has no in-the-door isce and water dispenser either. There is a ice maker in the freezer section that is not hooked up to water and turned off. Many like the ice feature but we don't use much ice and having another thing with water in it to winterize was not something we wanted.
That was the reason I asked, as I noticed many did not have the ice/water in the door. As far as winterizing, we will be full timing and won't have to worry about that problem, hopefully!
Just one more place to leak. We have a jug of cold water in thr top and a small bag of ice in the bottom
We have the older Samsung RF18 model, same as Roger's, I think. Back when we had it installed (Sept 2014) it seemed to be the most popular choice for RV installations in all brands of RV, not just Foretravel. No ice or water in our door, and we don't care. Unlike Roger, we do use the ice maker in the freezer section, and it works great. No water leaks in 4 years. We also do not winterize, so no worries there.
As Sly says: "Different strokes, for different folks"
My biggest concern is winterizing it. I don't want pink ice. And unlike our Texas friends a five lb bag of ice lasts us for a long time.
Your RF18, from all I've talked to still is the most recommended and used, with it being 2 inches less in depth, no need to trim out the extra 2 inches. Thank you for all the input from all, I am happy with our choice after the forums input old and recent.

An update after a couple months with this refrigerator, is, it is wonderful, no looking back. Especially we like the measurements that made it quick and easy to install, the almost quiet bell that rings should you leave a door ajar, the increased storage and room for 2 one gallon milk containers, the easy to see digital temp readouts for both freezer and refer, the ease to change the digital temp indicators, the led lighting, the quiet operation, the shelf layout, and the low power usage, ease of door and freezer operation.
We will update the power usage by the end of summer 2019 with actual numbers.
The one thing the RF18 does not have is the door alarm. That is a nice but not a critical feature.
Thanks for monitoring your power usage amd reporting it. Real world data helps folks understand choices better. We need more of the electric conversions, DC refrigerators and the smaller residential models as well. And the LP refrigerators running on electric too.
Power use may not be the deciding factor in a choice but it helps you understand the resources you might need to use your refrigerator the way you want.
I think I resolved my problem with not getting ice made on some occasions:
Did you know that, if you turn the water pump off, you will not get much ice?
What an inexpensive fix for my (non)problem.
Trent

A short follow up on our new residential fridge: love it! One of the best upgrades we did to our coach. Sold the double door Dometic that was working and purchased the Samsung counter depth 18 cu ft. fridge french door. And yes, it is packed full of food, as we fulltime and need the extra room. No water and ice in the door and the fridge works great. One of the biggest complaints on this fridge was the fact people were either not getting ice or getting too much. Ours is working fine as designed! Knock on wood! lol We also installed this fridge through the front door, not window. We removed the Dometic through the front door as well. Not hard with 3 people, thanks to Chris and his buddy that happened by to assist. Took the coach to Lowe's and removed the doors on the Samsung and we got it in while sitting under their canopy. With Chris Lang's expertise, it looks like it is built in! Many thanks Chris and the job you did! Dottie and I are sure enjoying this upgrade!
