Title: hydraulic line repair
Post by: GleamB on September 08, 2018, 12:59:44 pm
I apologize beforehand. A little while back, I asked about replacing a bad hose, but after searching for a while, I can't seem to find the post. Barry and Cindy said something about using a throw away pump to empty the reservoir, and Twig said something about reusing the saved fluid. Where is that post? Anyway....if we pump the fluid into a clean pail, is there any concern of contaminates getting into the system? What oil am I replacing, if I lose some??  I want to do this right. Thanks for any input.

The same oil as in your engine. If you can keep it clean it is re-useable. Remember about the nut at the bottom of the filler cap, only loosen then lift out the plug.

After reading the posts thru out the years of members replacing seals and getting a new box from redhead and replacing hoses
I myself would never "save" the old fluid,I assume your changing the filters? The hyd oil is the same as the engine oil,for a few
bucks more get new oil.I know some will disagree but that's what I would do.

There are THREE filters inside the sump. I reused my oil. Or maybe it was 2, I forget.

Ours has 3 and don't forget a new seal/o-ring.

The reservoir takes 15-40 but for some like our Detroit, the engine oil is #40 with no multi-grade allowed.

Where it me, unless the oil is recently new I would not try to reuse it, 5gal of 15-40 is not that costly. 3 filters in mine. Don't loose the Wing nut and spring that hold the filters down.

On my coach the filters are Nelson 84101B.  Don't know the O-ring part number.  Try Ryder Fleet Products or just google the filter number.

Mike that seal number did not show up in NAPA....
Going to change it out this winter.  Anyone have a link for the seal?

Here you go Filter gasket kit, 99955A, Fleetguard Cummins (https://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/fleetguard-cummins-99955a/filter-gasket-kit-p-v52-99955a)
My local truck shop keeps then in stock for ~$3
I order filters a case at a time from Fleetguard so no clue as to what NAPA has.

Just did this in July. Three filters and seal from Fleetguard. Used new 15-40 oil in 1998 U270 as per manual and sticker. Clean lid off good before removing. I would try to pump out the oil before removing the wing nut. Once oil out, take a clean microfiber towel or two and stuff around filter and then take off wing nut.  That spring is strong, nut is slick and it likes to fly up and then down to the bottom of the cannister.  Don't ask how I know and I was forewarned in a post on how to do this and still lost my hold on that wing nut. It landed just at the edge of the bottom hose opening and easily could have slid down the hose.

The next place in line is the pump so make sure nothing goes down that devil hole.
