Alcoa Lug Nut Covers (http://beamalarm.com/Documents/alcoa_lug_nut_covers.html)

Yes, turn them if they're like the ones above.

We cut round center hole in hub cap to see oil level anytime, otherwise flying blind, unless the cap comes off. Some other brands of motorhomes have OEM center holes.

If your talking about steer axle hubs why would you remove the wheel? Unless you are talking about a "baby moon" type hub cover and if so you use a screw driver to pry it off..I must be missing something here.

I wonder if I have been checking the level correctly.  My hubs have a removable disc on the wheel.  Take them off and there it is but maybe I am doing this wrong.

Just take the hub cap off and then your not "flying blind",more apt to get dirt and dust in that area with a hole in the hubcap, there is a small amount of air able to go in and out of the oil area, that's why there is a small hole in the red cap.Hubcaps go on and off pretty easy.

I've had some brake work done recently so I'm sure it's been checked sooo.

 If it's not leaking..... it's OK ??

Bob,

Not always.  You can get water in the hub and contaminate the oil, thus the oil will be milky and loose it's lubricity. Thus one reason to visually check.  But to answer your basic question, No the oil won't evaporate and disappear.

Fine......    I'll be checking it.  But I was hoping it was like greasing the brake calipers ( service at 100,000 or so) keep an eye on it but leave it alone.  I'm guessing I'll get flamed for that point of view :)

We won't flame or blame you.Think one reason we check it frequently is that it's so easy to,and then just pop the cap off and
add oil if needed.

The hub in the video is on a 18 wheeler, that picture in the video is the same as our front hubs, our front hubs have a hubcap
that prys off without taking anything else off,you then can see the hub and add oil.
Our rear hubs are lubricated by the differential oil and do not have that style of sight glass.
Barry and others are talking about cutting a hole in the front hubcap to see the level without taking the cap off.

So, After 5 years how has it worked? Did the window remain clear enough to effect inspection?

It has stayed clear and I check the oil level on a regular basis.  I believe the silicone and the center bolt pulling them together keeps it water tight.  If it did leak it would be easy to remove the center bolt and reseal it.  It is easier to see the oil level by using a flash light.

With a hole saw for the drill or a drill press. Drilled half way on each side.  Slow speed and not too agressive of a tooth set.

For something that only really needs to be looked at when your oil is changed this is a lot of work!
If you have a seal leaking, trust me You will see it long before you need to worry about hub oil level!
It makes a big mess! Jmo

I agree. How often do we check our rear end fluid. I had a bad seal once and I had fluid all over my tire. JMO as well.

Yep, leaking axle seals are obvious. Checked my front ones a year and a half ago when I had new front tires.

Kind of like this when you have a problem.  Had them replaced by a "highly recommended vendor" , not in Nac by the way, and obviously not torqued properly.
