Title: Air hose and tire pressure
Post by: GeeBee on September 21, 2018, 08:26:19 pm
Hello all, and thanks for all your help. We were at Foretravel today and (of course) left with a bill. They would not put air in our tires at proper pressure, mentioned legalities. May I ask what others do to check and ensure proper tire pressures? The red hose in the bay can be used to inflate? I cannot find anything on it in manuals. Would love to buy my own gauge etc if necessary, or use the one in the Coach.
I apologize if this has been asked, before......

Weigh your axles at least, then consult your tires inflation chart to find recommend pressure for your load. Pressure guage is for your safety so get a good one. TPMS tire pressure monitor system is for safety. These highly loaded tires tend to come apart in a very dramatic event, that you do not want to witness.

Well the correct answer is have your coach weighted (most any truck stop)  then consult you tire manufacturer for the correct inflation. In the mean time at least 100 or so lbs in the rear, and close to max inflation on the front. It may make it ride rough but until you get a weight it's better to run on the high side. Yes you can use the on board air hose with the engine running. Or you can buy a small 150 psi portable 120v compressor. You can get a truck air chuck and truck air gauge from any NAPA, just take your hose with you to get the right fittings.

Hi GeeBee, glad you are here.

Michelin RV Tires | View Michelin RV Tires load and inflation tables for... (https://www.michelinrvtires.com/reference-materials/load-and-inflation-tables/#/)

Tire pressures should be based on individual corner (and tag) wheel weights.  The tire pressure charts ar for the axle so for the front take the highest of the two sides and use that. Round up and find the pressure on the chart.  Many add 5 psi to that.  Rear axle, take the max of the rear pair and use it, round up and look it up on the chart. I don't have a tag so I am not sure there but probably the same as each of the dual tires.

The basic rule is that all tires on the same axle are set to the same pressure, based on the heaviest side.

Buy a good tire pressure gauge.  Lots of good choices out there.  In general you might be able to add some air to a tire from the aux air connection.  Sometimes the air available at that port is just barely above what you want to add to the tire and it might be slow.  Your air supply may come from the engine air compressor and you may be able to get 110 psi or a bit more.  I have a 120v air compressor that at 150 psi will add air much faster.

Many get a tire pressure monitoring system.  These wil show you what yout tire pressures are in real time.  Some show tire temperature as well.  I have this one.

Buy extra sensors as needed including some for your toad.

Lots of good choices for these as well.

For the tire pressure gauge, I like the one linked below.  The "Dual Head Chuck Straight Back" (see photo) works great on rear duals.

I use this one and really like it.  I also had the outer rear valve stems turned sideways so they're easier to check.
