Title: Which Side To Fill From
Post by: Super8mm on September 22, 2018, 12:26:02 pm
The other day I filled my tank for the first time.  I filled from the drivers side and I had to hold the lever and even then it kept kicking off.

Is there a difference when filling from the passenger side?

Thanks

I have good luck on the drivers side if the nozzle isn't very far into the neck.  On mine the passenger side goes directly into the tank but that's usually the slave pump so more trouble.

Thanks Rick, I might try the other side next time so I dont have to stand there hunched over and hold it "LOL"

We GV owners know all about using the "slave" pump and filling from the passenger side.  It was all very mysterious (and scary) to me the first few fill-ups.  I was nervous about turning on the "master" pump and laying the filler nozzle on the ground.  I figured it was a disaster waiting to happen, or that somebody would run up and steal some fuel while I wasn't looking.  But have never had any problem in many, many fuel stops, so now it's all routine.  But still a pain in the butt...

Thanks Chuck, that makes me feel a bit better about doing it.  :)

A little slave pump story.....    early in our Foretravel adventure before I understood the slave pump system.
I pulled into Pilot truck stop to fill and could not get the passenger pump to work!!!  I went into the cashier twice to get that dam thing going and nothin...  little did I know about pulling the main  nozzle and laying it on the ground while using the slave hose to fill.

The whole time I was struggling to get fueled up a 45foot pusher with toad ( so he wasn't backing up) was waiting behind me. Well he was obviously getting frustrated also because he actually came up to me and  said since you can't make this work, why don't you just move to one that works.... in a rude growly voice.  And since I realy wasn't make it work I did move our 36' diesel pusher to a different pump because I did need fuel and was totally frustrated at this point.

The trucker at the next pump was nice enough to enlighten me about the procedure and I fueled up without further issues.

BUT ... as I was leaving the cashier (receipt ) and returning to the RV I passed the jerk who asked me to move.  I said as I was passing him that he was an ___s hole and all he had to do was mention the slave pump procedure. He seemed a little humbled that I was barking back at him.  But who cares,    He is not the kind of RVer that I aspire to be.....

I did that when pulling my 5er once but was hesitant about laying the nozzle on the ground thinking they might figure I was not going to pay

I just tip the coach with the HWH system and fill from the most convenient side.

Thanks Wyatt, I will have to get better at manually adjusting it, so far I have not played with it much other than just raising it up all the way

The first time I pulled in for fuel after picking the coach up in NAC I looked at the fuel island and drove in backwards from the wrong way. The truckers were not happy.

A kind hearted trucker came over to show me how is done using the slave pump.

I've always found the truck drivers to be friendly and helpful. Not so much the RVers.

Thanks for the stories. I haven't ever used the slave pump so I was unaware of what to do with the master pump. Thank you all for saving me from looking worse than I already do :))

I'm thinking the slave pump confusion is a right of passage.

I prefer the satellite pump on the passenger side.  Easier to get to.  Just have to remember to put fuel hoses back and attach the gas cap.  Forgot that one time - but that's another story.

We don't level or tilt.  Figure what's a gallon or two when I mostly drive on the top half of the tank.

A pronounced tilt at the pump and partially removing the filler from the tank allows complete filling of the tank.

The reason I do that is to ensure repeatability as to the fuel systems function and to verify the VPMS info reported on the computer,

I think I can see the gens fuel usage and the aqua hot in the exact amount needed to fill the tank to a known point.

Disadvantage? An extreme hot climb after being totally full can cause the tank to overflow fuel out the tank vent hose.

Don't ask me how I know that,

So maybe fill 10 to 20 gallons use before a large hot full power grade climb.

I like the tank fairly full as a larger heat sink for the fuel return cooling.

If the fill amount from the motor  and the gen useage and aqua hot  consumption do not match then a possible issue needs to be addressed

If you tilt and fill from the high side then once you start and the coach levels won't that cause that extra fuel to possibly leak out?

Does not seem to vent normally.  There is still a bit of air in the tank as the lean is not excessive,  just a bit

That is what I did too but liked the passenger side best since I did not have to hunch under the door.

If slave pump available I always fill from both sides.  It takes about 10 minutes to pump in 120 gallons. If I'm using my Pilot RV Plus card I'm definitely done in 15 minutes which makes the truckers happy.
I thought everyone would fill from both sides if the opportunity presented itself. I don't care to hang around any longer than I have to.
