Title: Replacing Clearance Lights after Leaks
Post by: floridarandy on October 09, 2018, 07:22:22 pm
Careful examination shows these are at least a likely candidate for recent leaks.  When we return home Implan to replace all 12 (5 each front and rear and two side rear).

I'm looking for advice as follows:

1.  What is the best quality lens/housing (without regard to bulb)?
2.  What is the best mounting technique to minimize leaking
3.  Are these led's the correct LED bulb alternative?

Thanks

Randy, I have seen several posts with part numbers in the past on how to address this issue. They are here somewhere.

I looked at the search but not as current as I'd hoped.  With these technologies...LED in particular, I thought I'd check on current projects.

I looked and look as I don't like the big chrome models and some of the others look really cheap. I like the minimalist look so I settled on these small lights. The holes have a different spacing but I filled them in so no leaks, etc. They are plenty bright and exactly what I was looking for. $22 for 20 of them delivered from China.

I replaced all of mine with these ,Super bright and the hole spacing was same as old ones. I cut ends off and soldered heat shrank them as the end plugs would not go through hole in coach. Red for back and Amber on front

Red and amber color. They are bright as all get out compared to the stock ones. If your hole spacing is the same order 1 and see if you like it If you don't ill buy it from you for a spare.

Don't want to stick my neck out too far ---

Contact NAPA with part numbers, they can supply the equivalent in LEDs.  The size of the fixture should be the same including screw hole position.  They are a standard truck part.

Once the old ones are removed, clean all the crud out of the indentation in front and rear caps - side lights too..  Connect wire for wire.  (Seems to me the wire color is reversed?)  Plug up the wire holes and screw holes with a silicone or sealer of choice.  Re-seat the new fixture and secure with the ss/chrome screws. Use a clear sealant or silicone type material around the light and body and do the same to the screw holes and heads.  (Oh ya - turn the switch before you button it up.)

Not hard to do.  - Dump the air, firm ladder footing and be careful.

Not sure this is the best way but that is how I did it.  :D

I also replaced the stock side turn signal marker lights to these

If you're trying to avoid drilling new holes by matching the mounting holes, be aware that the hole for the wire may be different as well.  My stock incandescent lights have the wires running out of the center/back of the fixture.  The LEDS that I chose are made with the LED strip in the center, and the wires run out the back but off-center.  They required enlarging the hole with a Dremel and extra caulk.  Because of this, I've only installed 1 of these so far, not fixing the others 'till they're broke.  Otherwise they look almost exactly the same as stock and are plenty bright.  I think the covers may even be interchangeable.

If there are LED's that match both screws and the wires, that's a better option.

The one I posted the wires comes out center. Just had to cut off ends and solder into coach wires

It is at night ,the stock one seemed better in the daytime to me. but I wanted all Led outside. Now to come up with a new setup for the taillights and it will be good to go. The side turn sig required 1 hole to be drilled about a 1/4 inch difference.

Randy,
You might check with Foretravel.  I replaced most of mine several years ago and found FT prices in line.  This year while at FT for paint I had them install new LED lights.
As for sealing. nothing other than the new gasket should be required for sealing the light to the coach.

I also used the ones bdale above used except got the 14 pack which had both the red and amber in the same shipment. Center holes had to be moved to end on new fixtures but screw holes lined up perfect. Lots of GE silicone sealant and no leaks so far. Very bright, nice

Thanks for all the input.  Ended up ordering these:

18 Series, Incandescent, Red Rectangular, 1 Bulb, Marker Clearance Light,... (http://www.truck-lite.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?urlRequestType=Base&catalogId=10002&categoryId=&productId=49324&errorViewName=ProductDisplayErrorView&urlLangId=-1&langId=-1&top_category=&parent_category_rn=&storeId=10001)

7 each red and amber for about $50 shipped ($3.57ea) from a Ryder Fleet.  I chose this product for the center bulb placement and the foam gasket behind the light...same screw pattern as original.  And, replacement lenses and gaskets can be separately purchased.

I'll replace the incandescent bulbs with these LED's @$1.30 ea

Amazon.com: JDM ASTAR 10pcs Super Bright 194 168 175 2825 T10 PX Chipsets... (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DE7UC6C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Total cost $4.87 each.

Would the group recommend silicone or 3m 4000/4200 to seal screws and run a bead along the installed housing?

Use a polyurethane caulk only and silicone caulk is useless with outside fixtures. Inside too actually.

Hey John -

What would you suggest?

Sorry - re-read your post.  Only polyurethane caulk.
