Title: New Coolant
Post by: jor on November 27, 2018, 08:50:20 pm
Changed out the coolant today on the 8.3. Flushed twice with tap water and once with distilled. I used an old water pump to fill from a big plastic bin. Worked great. I think I ended up very close to 50/50 although figuring the amount of pure water in the system after flushing is not exact.

Knowing the total system capacity, achieving a 50/50 mixture is EASY:

As you did, final flush with distilled water.

Pour/pump in 1/2 system capacity in coolant concentrate.

Top off with distilled water.  You really don't care if it takes one gallon or 6-- depends on residual in lines to water heater and dash heater as well as those units.

Yea, that's kinda what I did. Concentrate amount same as amount remaining in system after flush and the rest pre-mx. Pretty close.

How/where did you dispose of the old coolant and coolant contaminated water?

I haven't gotten rid of the coolant yet. We've got a recycle center that will take it. The flushed fluid went back to mother earth.

If your city doesn't have a recycle center that takes coolant, call the maintenance on city/county vehicles.  I have had very good luck taking with the head of that department-- evidently not many ask and they seem happy to help.
