Title: Power Tech voltage regulator
Post by: CAPEHORN31 on February 15, 2019, 10:15:08 am
My generator saga is solved.  I trouble shot my generator problem to a faulty voltage regulator thanks to the forum and Jeff at Power Tech.  I decided to take a road trip to Power Tech in Leesberg, Florida.  Jeff has a mobile generator repair service since Power Tech does not do repairs at the factory.  Jeff is still the service manager there but he only does repair work after 5 and weekends.  I met him at the Lowe's parking lot at 5 pm and within an hour he removed and replaced the voltage regulator.  He explained how the new regulator is wired different than the old one and if it is installed wrong it will cause the head unit to burn up.  I could have probably installed the new one by myself but being sure it was done right for $480.00 it was worth the every penny.  Thanks to Jeff at Power Tech.

Count me as one who burned up a head unit.
Installed wrong means copying the old labeled wires.

Congrats. Jeff helped me diagnose my bad voltage regulator on an 8KW unit.

I had my head unit burn up when MOT installed my Voltage regulator wrong.  The good thing is they stepped up and paid for the repair without a hassle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4tixm-kn00 my explanation of the issue as it applies to my 12kw generator.  It has to do with grounding one lead and not separating another.

One thing they don't mention too is that on startup the voltage will probably be very low.  You have to crank a trim pot in there to bring it to spec.  It's extremely sensitive.
