Title: Batteries
Post by: juicesqueezer on February 18, 2019, 09:42:59 pm
We are going to go solar on our new to us coach when we purchase it.  Question, has anyone heard of these and or tried them?  Seems like the technology is jumping leaps and bounds each and every day.  Below is a description of these batteries.  Any information on these would be most appreciated!

LTO battery is named Lithium titanate battery(Li4Ti5O12), is a new generation lithium-ion battery that used the LTO as cathode material instead of graphite, the anode can be LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, LiFePO4, and NiCoMn. as a new type rechargeable lithium battery, LTO battery has great performances of perfect high safety, high stability, super long cycle life and strong temperature tolerance. It can be widely used in electrical car, charging station, tourism bus, yacht, wind power generation storage, transport signal system, solar-wind power street lights,UPS back up power, home energy storage, mine, disaster assistance, electrical system, smart electricity network, communication base, back up battery for hospital, financial industry, telecom system, LTO battery is also a good choice for some special fields such as military, long way shipping, aerospace who requires high safety, high stability and long life.
LTO battery developed by Padre Electronics takes the LiMn2O4 as a cathode while using LTO as an anode, it proves that the battery can have a high energy transfer efficiency of 86%~91% between charging and discharging under the environmental temperature of zero 30 degrees to up zero 55 degrees, the performance is very good. so far, normal lithium-ion battery has a cycle life of about 500 times, but Padre LTO battery cycle life can reach over 20000 times, it means more than 15 years. Padre LTO battery has been widely used in electric cars, e-bike, porter, patrol car, tour car, in coming future, it will also be used for e-bus, mine projects, military system and aerospace industry.

They cost 7x a used EV battery.

The best value is used Nissan Leaf batteries, which are LiMn2O4 spinel, a robust, long-life design. IMHO, a used full 48-module pack costing $3,400 would be good for about 2000 more cycles at 50% DOD in an RV application.

Granted, these are used, and have 70% capacity left, or 17KWH, but is still a good value, and they will probably outlast your rig ownership:

COST COMPARISON, bulk battery purchase
- Used Leaf batteries $200/KWH  vs
- New Lithium Titanium Batteries $1,500/KWH

That's about 7 times more expensive.

DM me for more info and ask me how 10 years of EV experience has guided me to this recommendation.

Thanks for everyone's responses.  Just heard about these and since I am not a battery guru, thought I would post this.  I am familiar with Battle Born and some of the other lithiums, but the initial price is steep.  I know the gels we had in our Foretravel were very good and have purchased and used AGM's as well.  I spoke with a guy yesterday that is running these, so thought I would see what the consensus was on this newest technology!  Any other info, please chime in.
Tim, thanks for the info on costs, etc.

I have a buddy who got a used battery from a Chevy Volt and is using it in his 1974 MCI bus that he has converted to all electric.  Since it was a tour bus it was already set up for 24 volts and he is running a ton of solar on the roof.  He even installed a mini-split unit in the bedroom that he can run off his lithium battery bank for those hot nights in summer.  He is much more of a DIY guy than I am but is very happy with how it works and the cost.  He and his wife live full time in their bus.

I wonder how upgrading our battery system to that might work?    mmmmmmmmmm ^.^d
