Title: Ready to service our new rig
Post by: Familyrig on February 28, 2019, 04:01:10 am
Getting ready to start servicing our new rig and looking for a little confirmation that I am going down the right path....

So far for the engine (C8.3) I have:
Fleetguard LF9009 oil filter = Amazon.com: Cummins Filtration LF9009 Oil/Lube Filter: Automotive (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OQCHLU/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_1W5DCbE1MP9Z7)
Chevron Delo 400 6.3 gallons = Chevron Delo 400 SDE SAE 15W-40, 1 GALLON - Walmart.com (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Chevron-Delo-400-SDE-SAE-15W-40-1-GALLON/16940138)
Fumoto F104n = https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D9FDW47/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have found the oil plug torque spec to be 60 lbft.  (seems a little high??)
Serpentine belt Gates K080605HD- V-belt = https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001R5W6FE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
Belt tensioner Gates = https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CRDLCU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
Air Filter Fleetguard  AF931M = https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IW50DJW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1E60MQA5M7ZX1&psc=1

Generator:
Kubota oil filter 16271-32090 = https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0731KC1HB/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_.85DCbH359ZRF
Kubota fuel filter 70000-43081 = Amazon.com : 2PK Genuine Kubota Fuel Filter 70000-43081 15221-43080 70000-430... (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FN43L75/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_5?smid=A2V15RW4CEP3XT&psc=1)
Chevron Delo 400 Oil (not sure of capacity)= Chevron Delo 400 SDE SAE 15W-40, 1 GALLON - Walmart.com (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Chevron-Delo-400-SDE-SAE-15W-40-1-GALLON/16940138)

I hope to complete these items in the next week (weather pending) then move on to transmission, rear end oil changes, coolant change out & fuel filters.  If there is any item that you believe I should change up or any tips I am all ears!!  Right now I am a little overwhelmed with learning and researching as much as I can.  I will feel a lot better when I can start checking more items off my list.
Thanks for your help.

David

The only part I would change of the above is get the Donaldson blue air filter and keep the other for a spare.Do all the above and
then get the Hyd fluid o-ring,oil and filters.Would definitely use synthetic for rear end, in my opinion the best is Amsoil.Use the
transynd for the fluid,Amsoil also has the same product and use the Allison filter kit.Start with all that and then go from there, you
will have help here.

John,
Thank you for the help.  I was able to find the Donaldson Blue Air Filter on Amazon Amazon.com: Donaldson P140822 Filter: Industrial & Scientific (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KNIUNJM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1)

Had planned to go synthetic, will have to track down Amsoil dealer.  I know I have seen the name at a local truck stop but maybe O'reillys?

David,

On your coach, does the clean air go IN the big open end of the air filter, and OUT through the sides to the engine?  Or, does it go IN through the sides of the filter, and OUT the big open end to the engine?  I ask, because around 1994 was a "changeover" period at Foretravel in many of the chassis design areas, so your coach air cleaner might work either way.

Air filters are designed to flow in one direction.  It is important to choose a filter (regardless of brand) that physically fits the application, and that flows the proper direction.  Air filters have caused a LOT of confusion on this Forum, even amongst the really experienced owners.  The link below will take you to a lengthy discussion of the subject, which you may have already looked at.  Also, a link to the AF931M filter specs, and to the AF954M specs.  You can see that there are some differences, both in physical dimensions and in flow direction.  I use the AF954M on our coach.

Possible water in air filter? (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=30332.msg262556#msg262556)  (scroll up and down to see the rest of the 5-page thread)

Would definitely use synthetic for rear end, in my opinion the best is Amsoil.

I don't want to start a firestorm but Amsoil is not approved by Meritor as a synthetic rear axle oil supplier.

It's also not approved by Mercedes and many other makes.

Air Filters

The document for the EBA Konepac canister is for the inside to outside flow.  The KBI style uses a Donaldson Blue DBA5024 premium filter.

The document for the ECG Konepac canister is for the outside to inside flow.  The bolted cover  style uses a Donaldson Blue DBA5057 premium filter.

Be sure you know exactly what sort of filter you need.

The service technician at Cummins told me there is no air cleaner inspection.  If you open the canister up replace the filter after doing a thorough cleaning.

And if you have one of those there is a label on the canister with the filter number.

TMAN,  6 yrs running Amsoil rear end synthetic and not one problem yet, so??
Amsoil in Allison too and no problems? Amsoil in engine and in cars, no problem.?
Amsoil additives for fuel now and again, no problem?
I swear my tranny is running cooler than when it was running Transynd, which I dumped out.
Tom ( the oil guy who was supposed to be one of the  Castrol designers of Transynd )actually told me not to use  Amsoil as it would ruin the Allison fairly quickly, we'll 6 yrs later I bet it actually is one of the smoothest shifting ones on the road.
Like Dave M said DWMY HAPPY.

From my reading.... if you dont pay for the testing which runs in the millions $$$$ .. you cant get on the list even though you use the same specd materials.

Comes down to money.. Pay to play!!!

As an Amsoil user and dealer I didn't want to say that but your exactly right.Sort of like consumer guide testing ladders but
leaving out Little Giant for some off the wall reason.

Old engineering saying, extraordinary claims require extraordinary 3rd party evidence. That being said, quality filters protect, and typically have a high holding capacity.

This doesn't look like millions to get API certification. API | EOLCS Application and Fees (https://www.api.org/products-and-services/engine-oil/application-and-fees#tab-fees)
I love how defensive Amsoil dealers and proponets get.
JohnH, you are doing oil sampling on your transmission and engine arn't you? Could you share the results?

And you can say the exact same thing about the people that choose not to use synthetics, just don't use it, don't knock me for
using it.I have some sample reports I will post, maybe John will too.In the last couple of months we have had 2 Cat engines
require rebuilds for this mysterous number 6 cylinder problem, it may have been carbon build up,(this is on an engine that some
say should last this 500k to a million miles),well if carbon build up did factor in I'm sure that if the owners knew that ahead of time
they may have tried an oil with almost NO carbon build up.API and approved by a manufacturer are 2 different things.Would love
to see what a "never synthetic" would do if he ever got one of these high end cars that come with it, take it to Walmart and get
their cheapest Dino oil because you have had good luck with it?Amsoil is API SN PLUS CERTFIED.

Go on the various RV sites and read all the posts by the retired Allison Engineer that create the Fluid and tested it... Talked over a million to go through the testing and get approvals..

Since the topic was all over I should have clarified a little better..

See, you automatically get defensive and assume I am anti synthetic. I run nothing but full synthetic(no blends). I am currently running Shell Rotella T-6 5-40. I just won't run a oil like Amsoil that is not API certified and is not on the list of authorised oil such as Cummins Engineering Standards - 20086, Cummins Oil Registration List. Now if you go to this list you will see, "Endorsed and Recommended by Cummins - Valvoline™ Premium Blue™". This is because they have a nice little marketing agreement with Valvoline. Under this, you will find the list of "Alternatives". This list also shots down those who say you can't run a 5-40 oil as there are several on the list.
John 44 ,"Amsoil is API SN PLUS CERTFIED" Yes John that is a GAS certification and how is that relevant to this discussion on diesel oil?

OK, this one is degenerating and getting personal.

The Amsoil/synthetic debate has been well covered here and on a number of other threads.

Please, no more, or I WILL lock it down.

Thanks.

I think you are talking about Tom Johnson who now is part owner and President of JG Lubricant Services, LLC. Yes I have heard his storey. Yes it is probably true they spent lots of money doing the work at Allison geting ready. The link I posted shows the cost at API.

All other oil discussion aside... thank you guys for the help with air filters and love to see passion for using the best possible products.  I am a big boater and motorcyclist so used to heated debate over which oil, parts, additives and tires are best.  It is these forums that make owning toys so enjoyable.
I will hopefully get part numbers today.  Work has been crazy with storms, hoping to start ordering and purchasing everything this weekend.

Will be doing more research on Allison, rear end and engine oil recommendations for future. Being that i want to go camping in a couple of weeks for now I was planning on using what was recommended from manufacture be it the best or not.

Thanks again,  David

David, did you hear about the Shell rebate on T-5 and T-6 oil?

Nice rebate, will read further when I get off work.  Is that what most are running, the T-6 with 8.3? I had planned on Delo 400 but could go either way. I believe I found a comment on here that individual stopped burning oil when switched to T-6.

Thanks,

David

I have been using  T4 in my mbz diesel for 20 years, also very popular with the club sport bike racer's that run 15-16,000 rpm and change oil after every event. T4 in my coach now to flush out older stuff but will switch to T6 this summer once I start using it more. 1 gallon jugs are more convenient for me and easier to pour into my oil fill opening.

I found the rebate to be better geting the 21/2 gal jugs or the 5gal bucket. I am lucky I only need about 20qt to do engine and generator. Had to order the 21/2 gal jugs for in store delivery at my local Walmart. You could always use a pump or "decant" into a gal container to make it easier to pore into the engine.
