Title: Allison Gear Display
Post by: U295 Owner on April 03, 2019, 08:13:15 pm
Has anyone had their gear display changed to show the actual gear you are currently in instead of showing the gear you selected?

Which control panel do you have?  Sounds like you have WTEC III with one "gear" window?

Yes, the single window...and I don't like it a bit!

If you have a 99 or newer you can get a vmspc and it will show you what gear you are in plus much more information. Or you can get a different Allison touch pad.

You could give John Kopalek a call, and see if he has any suggestions on what options might be available to you.  He has expert knowledge of the Allison control panels.  Talking to him won't cost you anything - and he is one sharp technician.

I'm not sure about the 8.3 but my 95 M11 allowed use of the VMSpc device. I also had the Allison pad that displayed only the selected gear. The VMS overcame that limitation.

No, the Allison display (single window) can not be changed.

But lots of the aftermarket monitoring systems do show/can show gear actually in.

You might also find it helpful to make up a MPH vs RPM for each gear.  Doesn't take long to memorize it while driving.

If you need the formula, let us know and you can make one up for your coach.

The original owner of our coach had an Allison remote gear display put above the pilot seat along with an altimeter and sat radio. The display has two windows. One displays the gear it is in and another says the highest gear selected. It also says when the torque converter is locked. It plugs in under the dash in the diagnostic port. Maybe you can still get them and install one in your coach. Mine is not hooked up at the moment because I am using Silverleaf VMSPC>

Mark,

Do you have a link to the Allison remote display you have?

Here you go Brett. Not sure now that it is Allison brand though.

Be interesting to know where that indicator panel came from.  I'm wondering if it could be military surplus.  I know some military vehicles, like the FMTV, use Allison trannys.  Perhaps some of them had separate gear indicator panels?

Or perhaps it is out of some kind of construction or mining equipment?

Google search hasn't turned up anything...yet.

Mike is talking about a 5th gear pre-select for exhaust brake.

And the modification is the walnut box the shift pad is mounted on-- much more ergonomically functional that the OE location forward and vertical.
