Title: Javelina Upgrade Kit 2163
Post by: Bill and Marsha on April 16, 2019, 10:34:16 pm
While going through the paperwork that came with my coach I found in 2010 an upgraded backup camera and COLOR monitor had been purchased, this was puzzling because my monitor displays in B&W. I went out to the coach, lifted the dash and sure enough there was a Model 2162 LCD monitor. I went up and looked at the backup camera however there were no markings from the outside, I ASSUME at this point the camera is the upgraded one since the PW indicates it was part of the purchase. I wanted to check the install and researched on the forum and google without much luck as to installation instructions. I called Javelina to see if I could get the instructions for the installation and they were NOT very helpful at all, I got the feeling I should have never mentioned Foretravel.
My question is does anyone have the installation instructions and or suggestions where I go from here? My next move was going to try and remove the camera to make sure it is the upgraded model. I UNDERSTAND THE NEWER TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TODAY IS PROBABLY FAR SUPERIOR AND FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE, IT IS ON MY WISHLIST JUST WAS HOPING I COULD GET COLOR FROM THE CURRENT SET UP.

if the display is color then you probably have BW camera. Just a guess though.. I would assume the camera failed and was replaced with a cheap one.. but just guessing

You are probably correct David, that makes sense.  Thanks

I did this to mine, there were no instructions to follow. I flew by the seat of my pants and got it somewhat right. My camera had 2 nuts holding it in from the inside. I took those off, then with some work I got the old camera out. I had a piece of lexan cut the same size as the old camera. I used the old wiring, radio shack has ends that will adapt to the rca plug ins. Keep in mind that you will need a monitor that has a reversible screen and at least a 3 channel. It all ended up working for me. The only thing I need to change is, drill a hole in the lexan and get the camera through it. I have it on the back side of the lexan and it has a bad glare.

I think I have the same setup, can't check for sure as the coach and documentation are in storage. The original camera/monitor setup was replaced by a "new" Javelina in about 2008. I have a little color when it is cloudy but nothing like a car backup camera quality. If there is any sun, the color washes out to black and white most likely due to the IR sensors over-driving according to my former neighbor security camera expert. IIRC Javelina did tell me to make sure that I had a good ground or I might have similar symptoms.

My color camera has slowly degraded to low contrast nearly black and white. When I was at FOT last year, a tech looked at it and quickly made it as good as new.

He cleaned the glass camera window with something much better than the windex I had been using. Maybe TSP or vinegar?

I had been looking into replacing the camera.

On a similar note, I've discovered some USB adapters plugged into the cigarette lighter socket produce enough electrical noise to make it look like the color monitor is dying.

Why at least a three channel, are you running side cameras?

One for the camera, one for the fresh, waste and propane tanks and the last channel for the altimeter/barometer/outside thermostat.

I checked the camera today, it is the color replacement. The camera and the monitor are both the "upgraded" models, one are the other must have died to B&W. It looks like the camera can be removed without to much trouble, might try a budget replacement just to see, don't want to spend much, have on the list to replace both at some point.
