Title: Kubota Genset oil/filter change interval (Im just gonna ask this silly question)
Post by: Michaeloh59 on June 03, 2019, 09:40:20 pm
Im the kinda guy that likes to runaround- whoa just kiddin. Thats the song runaround sue that keeps playing in my head. I am the kinda guy that sticks to the factory specs and intervals though. But for the owners of the Kubota mh-10 generators i gotta ask: are yall still changing oil and filter at 100 hours? I dont know if there is a new standard for the synthetic oils, but i do know that 100 hours comes mighty quick in the South/Southwest. A silly question but i appreciate yall wisdom, as always.

100 hours on oil, oil and filters at 200 hours

oil is cheap, diesel motors not so much....

Ford 6.0 liters.....ugh......

kid has a 2005 F350 with 6 liter.  at 175,000 miles engine went (who knows how many times it went before that with previous owners - all the usual stuff that happens to 6 liters.

Sent out the heads, added about $4-5K of bulletproof diesel parts that fix some of the stuff with the 6.0 design.  325,000 miles now, runs great, pulls hard, doesnt use oil. A few injectors along the way and a total rebuild of all the front chassis parts as will, and it is a pretty nice truck.

I use 200 hours. Sometimes sooner if a good place to get it done.

Oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter as scheduled.  In eight years of owning out coach we have added a whopping 400 hrs to the 421 that was on it when we bought it.  It gets run every month for a half hour no matter what.

I too think 100 hrs is probably a waste of oil, but only 6 quarts, so I usually change it then. When traveling for 4 to 6 weeks the generator usually has 200 to 250 hours on the oil before I return home. I don't bother changing it on the road. It's only a little over a month old and new oils are much better today than 25 years ago. I use quality oil and filters and don't loose sleep over it.

IMHO 100 hours is a bit excessive. 200-250 hours or 18 mos. last 18 months was 79 hours.

I'm not sure of the brand of power unit but a similar 4 cylinder diesel on a truck refrigeration unit.  Arkansas White, a Volvo freightliner dealer ran one loaded for one year without stop.  At the end of year it was torn down, checked, reassembled as is and put back in service.  100 hour oil change is like an oil change at 5k miles on a hd diesel. Unnecessary and wasteful. Oil is not cheap. Far from it when you consider the true cost. Better to run an oil analysis a few times and follow the recommendations.

I run full synthetic diesel oil in all my diesel engines. 250-500hours min before I change oil, usually longer.

Today's oils are much better than oils 20 years ago when some of our engines both gen sets and motorhomes where built.

Yes I agree. But does that translate to a different interval, and if so what is that interval? If someone were doing oil analysis of thier gen oil they might be able to speak with authority about what intervals make sense. That would be really interesting data.

Im sure he is religious about his fluids and filters and watches his deltas. Lotsa people love them a 6.0L but they tend to be meticulous about em.

My Powertech Manual says 200 hours on the oil and 400 hours on the filter

Michael,

We have an Isuzu power unit (not the Kubota)  but we do oil analysis to determine change interval. Doing oil analysis there has been no set hour time due to all the variables.  Oil quality can be effected by the environment that the engine is run in (like heat, humidity), engine load, fuel quality and engine wear so each change can be different.

Pamela and Mike so what is your interval for sampling oil?

This is the recommendation on my 1997 MH-10

Annually, along with engine and trans. oils

That sure sounds like a good idea.
