For some reason, when we first got this rig we bought a 10" foam mattress. It looked great but you almost needed a grappling hook or a block and tackle to hoist yourself up onto the thing. Anyhow, just replaced it with a 7" model. Here's what the old one looked like.

I had to put a step on the DW's side to get in bed with the 10" I have
We did that also, so like craneman I put a step on DW side so she can get in bed
It's all good
Chris
Our coach came with a pillow top as it would not fit in their new coach. Don't like the height and you need stronger struts to keep the bed up when working on the engine.

I want to do the same thing. Our matress was terrible our first night. So I bought a really nice memory foam pad for the top. Now its even 2" taller. I really don't like the height. Please let us know how the new thin matress sleeps!
How do you get the old mattress out the entrance door? I know the new foam ones come rolled up and expand out.
The original one on our coach just went out the door with 2 people guiding it. It did flex some. One drawback has been moving the new one out of the bedroom to work on items under the bed. Being thicker it doesn't raise much before hitting the overhead fan.
We bought a queen sized pillowtop mattress for our class C and two months later traded the C for our Foretravel GV, so we swapped the mattresses between the two RVs. It took four people to "fold" the pillowtop mattress and get it onto the bed platform in the GV.
No problem getting the bigger, thicker mattress in the door and down the hall but it then needed to be twisted from standing on a side to laying flat on the platform. This was difficult because the bathroom wall/hallway corner is only about one foot away from the bed platform. Thus--twist/distort the mattress.
Our coach has the bed platform that extends to the driver's side wall so all the DW needed was a small step platform to assist her to get on to the bed platform.
Guess what? We, the DW and me, are NEVER going to try to get that mattress out of there--at least not in one piece!! :)) :)) >:D
Nitehawk, we just removed the mattress for cleaning and like you said, easy to get into the coach but it took two of us twisting the mattress to get it back on the platform. Really have to be careful to not tear it on the metal locating tabs on the platform.

Sounds like a long legged woman would solve almost all the problems!
Much more expensive solution, a thinner mattress would be far less expensive.
Nothing like RV humor. ^.^d ^.^d ^.^d

Pierce, I removed the tabs first per "She who MUST be obeyed" (if I hear her. Selective hearing, you know)
I pulled, pushed, bent, sweated and cursed. But... I failed. In a fit of desperation I went at it with knife and threw it in the back of the pickup!

I knew that we would "struggle" with the replacement mattress after I brought the coach home, the real fun starts when you want to flip or better yet turn the darned thing.
They did away with the tabs or someone removed them on our '99
The DW just reminded me that we also used two ratchet straps to "fold" the mattress a bit. It seems that us great, bit, tough, muscular guys (4) couldn't seem to stay positioned long enough to hold the mattress folded and move it while we were wedged in one location.
After our last trip we chucked our 10" memory foam mattress. We were tired of climbing in and out of it and I was sick of bashing my knuckles changing sheets. This is our first trip with the new 7" memory foam mattress.
1. The new mattress is firmer than the 10". We prefer the firmer mattress and find it comfortable.
2. Changing sheets is much easier.
3. Engine cover is easier to lift.
4. The thinner mattress lines up better with night tables and reading lights.
Our original mattress was the Posturepedic or whatever it was called.. it was real soft in the summer but was rock hard in the winter.. tossed it for a purple mattress original .. couldn't be happier .. bought the purple #3 for the house but I prefer the original...that was moving the aireloom into the spare room
We have had good luck with seclet comfort air beds have one in the house, our old mattress was done so we got a Queen size seclet comfort and works great.
Wanted to add the the Select Comfort mattresses are super light no added weight to lifting the bed.👍😁
We still have the original mattress and while its not bad, wanted to change it out next year.
Was going with bed in a box (https://www.bedinabox.com/products/bed-in-a-box-dual-hybrid) as we have had good success with their products, but this on is 13 inches tall... and while I am over 6'.. wife is a bit.... shorter. Will have to rethink that one.
Or maybe I just make a stool for her side to make it easier to get in and out...
David, looked at the new purple bed... I really like the look of it. I am a side sleeper and sleep hot. My current bed has outlast tech built in from bed in a box, and while that is good, more air flow would be better. Have to keep a eye out for a sale from them.
Bob they have return centers.. I have bought both mine as returns. Paid less than half.. look on offer up and craigslist.. good deals. They are repackaged for sale .. clean.
We just recently swapped out the mattress. It was a struggle to wrestle it out the door, but got it done. Like Andy above, we went with the Select Comfort Queen. It comes in pieces so it was simple to get in and install. You can adjust each side separate, from very soft to very firm. Added a memory foam topper and we love it.
I would definitely rethink the
weight of a 13" thick foam mattress . You do not want the support to fail when the platform was lifted while someone was accessing the engine. The hinges and supports for the bed platform would need to be beefed up quite a bit.
When I brought our coach home one of the first things to go was the mattress, luckily in Boulder we have Verlo mattress who made us a mattress to fit after laying around on various "test beds". In the coming spring we'll have them build us a new one and they'll wrestle them in and out or vice versa then dispose of the old one.
Purple Original King Mattress - furniture - by owner - sale (https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/fuo/d/san-antonio-purple-original-king/6956032898.html)
Purple Queen Mattress - furniture - by owner - sale (https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/fuo/d/san-antonio-purple-queen-mattress/6956031285.html)
Why would someone resell these? Is this like someone returning it and someone local repackages it?
As a 240 lb side sleeper, I am looking more for a 3-4 inch one, but I see Michelle's point on weight. But the lifts can be doubled up and I always use a prop to as well. Just don't trust those gas filled lifts....
I measured the original mattress, 9 inches. But its pretty heavy.
The all memory foam mattresses are pretty heavy waiting on the coil filled ones to see it they are less so.
David, I watched a few youtube videos on the Purple beds, pretty innovative.
They have returns.. purple sends them through a cleaning process like all other returns.. mattress can go to a second hand store after cleaning. Can not be resold as new. Most people who resell these pick them up from the factory.. unless you see them as a for sale by owner
Don't overlook a need to address the piano hinge at the head of the bed. IIRC some folks had that pull out when they beefed up the gas struts that help with raising the platform.
I went to a foam shop and had my mattress made, 4 inches soft foam and 2 inches of memory foam I love it. It is a lot lighter than
the original. I was at a RV show last week and there was a foam shop there and I found a system that I think is better than mine.
What I like about foam shops is that you can piece the bed together to fit your likes as we don't all like the same bed.
