Title: Allison trans joystick project.
Post by: Bob & Sue on June 27, 2019, 12:23:03 am
I'm hoping that I've done my last mountain pass crossing with OUT the Allison joystick. I love the retarder function on the tranny but the brake pedal ( 3 stage ) activation is not getting it done on the Siskiyou pass and others.

As I'm looking at collecting parts for this project I found this on eBay by taking others advise.  Google the part # and see what you find.  Hope it's the right one. If so , I saved some money. At least on this part.    Counting on the forum pros to confirm that I got the right part....

  Price.. $75.00

Bob,

That is the correct number/part for what you are doing.

Thanks Mike....

Now if I get the wiring harness part right I'll be a happy camper.    Beamalarm list the part that I think I need , although there are many, many operational choices according to the "WTEC-111 retarder controls page" (beamalarm).

I'm just goin with the 29506474 part number. Thanks again Mike for the confirmation.

FT.  Thanks for the additional part numbers. I wasn't aware of the y- harness number.

How's that new Redhead doing ?

Thankfully it is doing fine! NO LEAKS! 😁

It actually drives a little better I believe, it drove good before, no complaints, but now that I can compare before and after, I'll take the after. 😉

Reopening an old tread.  Bear with me.

I'm wanting to add joystick retard to my 1998 U270 (with brake pedal retard).  From previous messages here, there 3 part numbers:

Allison Joystick  #29521372
Control  module # 29506474
"Y" harness - P28173

I'm uncertain as to the installation but my limited understanding has me thinking that I only need the joystick and "Y" Harness.  The Control module would only be needed if I wanted brake light & cruise interfacing.

Anyone know if that is correct?

Also, are there any instructions for the install floating around?

Thanks

Brake light & Cruise interface is only done with a new Bosch (cube) relay located next to air brake switches in streetside front bay. Easy to add, but not required. Not sure why the control module and what it does. Normal Joy stick orientation is off forward. Mount in empty slot on side dash.

Try this thread from the Archives to see if it contains any helpful joystick installation tips:

This is on my list to dig into and test a bit, but from what I can tell, the transmission controller is looking for a 0-5v signal to activate the retarder at different levels. The control boxes convert the pressure switch or joystick signals into the 5v signal for the controller. I think you would need the control box that matches the joystick so that the signal is correct into the transmission controller.

The thread linked earlier in this thread was indeed helpful. I'm still trying to find out the exact use of:
Control  module # 29506474
And whether or not it is required for the installation.
I know several people here have added the joystick, so just hoping to hear from one of them.

I have the Y harness coming from foretravel.

Cheers!

Pretty sure that the module is also needed. I have installed several and the joystick plugs into the module.

When Chuck & Jeannie posted a link to an old Joystick thread, it was impressive to see our 18 year-old details about adding a Joystick.

Shows the long-lasting value of Steve & Michelle's Foreforums and how old postings have a long life that can help others over decades.
