Title: Oils, Fluids - Type
Post by: MarkC on July 14, 2019, 02:53:29 pm
As I am new to the diesel world, I was curious as to what weights and brands of oils and hydraulic fluids everyone is using.
I have the cummins 8.3.
Your thoughts ?

Most use 15-40 weight oil.

Shell Rotella T and Delo 400 are popular brands and available at Walmart, etc.

Not sure there are any "bad" oils that are diesel rated.

Be sure to use a diesel oil rated CK4  NOT FA4.

As far as hydraulic oil, most of the reservoirs are labeled with what is recommend.  Delo 400 15-40 for most year models.

Trying to not start the debate but many of us use Amsoil and install an 2nd oil filter that filters to 1 micron,we take oil samples and
can go upwards of 20K miles on a change.

15-40 oil in the motor and generator, 15-40 in the hyd tank, transend 295 spec fluid in the transmission, long life OAT red coolant the the radiators, 85-140 synthetic gear oil the rear axle.
Synthetic lubricants are good stuff and $$$, your call.

Amsoil all around and I am really pleased with the "Torque Drive "Synthetic in Allison, much better than the Transynd I took out.
As John 44 mentions we also have the bypass oil filter.
