Title: Leaking Rear Cover
Post by: Deb and Mike on July 26, 2019, 09:03:18 am
We are parked near family in Amherst Oh. After a week here we've found a large oil stain on the ground between the rear tires.  An mechanic friend also crawled underneath and said it is "leaking gear oil from the rear cover."  He recommended Sylvester's Truck and Tire near Avon OH, 18 miles away for honest truck repair.  Is it safe to drive it there or should we have it towed?

Check your engine oil and hydraulic canister and drive it unless it's running out as fast as you pour it in. Check Allison trans fluid as well until you find out what's leaking.

If is between the tires it is gear oil. If you know the smell you can't miss it. If the mechanic said it is the rear cover check the diff. and if low add some gear oil that your coach requires then drive to where you plan to have it repaired. If it is trans oil haul it.

I miss read it and never thought of diff. I do know anytime you can avoid towing one you are better off.. not just the expense but the wrong wrecker "operator " can tear up more than he can remedy.

My opinion: Top up the diff, wrap a diaper and a plastic bag taped in place around it to keep oil off the roads to protect motorcyclists, and drive it in for repair.
