Title: New rear view camera and dash monitor using existing cable
Post by: cdm on August 08, 2019, 07:58:47 pm
Today, On my 2004 U320, I installed a new rear view camera and dash monitor using the existing 8 wire cable that runs from front to back. I have very little experience working with audio/video equipment. After talking with Tim at RV Cams, and purchasing the components needed from him, I decided to give it a try.
I removed the old Panasonic camera, the Panasonic component under the dash where the existing cable terminated, and The Mito camera controller.
I installed a new Voyager camera using the same bracket that held the Panasonic camera. I installed a new Voyager monitor at the dash.
I spliced in the new Voyager cable ends at each end of the existing cable using Posi Products connectors. Only 4 of the 8 wires are needed. I did not connect the audio wire. This splicing was much easier than I anticipated. Thankfully there was a couple of feet of of existing cable to work with at each end. I used the Posi Products connectors. These connectors allows the system to be checked and wiring changes easily made if needed.
The new Voyager monitor has 4 audio/video inputs. The rear and side camera video cables connect direct to the new monitor ends. The video cable from the Javelina/AUDIT connects direct to the remaining 4th new monitor end,  and the orientation is correct
I tested everything and all works well. The side cameras activate when turn signals engage. The monitor has many source settings allowing multiple camera configurations to display at same time.
This installation was long overdue. I had a very poor camera picture and there were times I would lose the picture completely, which I believe was due to a fault in one of the old components. This install is much cleaner, direct from camera to monitor, many antiquated components have been eliminated.
A few pictures are attached.
I highly recommend Tim at RV cams, his guidance was very helpful and he has very fast shipping.
