Title: Any turbo wrap recommendations
Post by: "Irish" on August 15, 2019, 07:49:00 am
I am installing new insulation in the engine bay at the moment. The old stuff was dirty and degraded. The new insulation designed for engine compartments has a foil facing which should be easier to clean and possibly lower the temperature of the bed mattress after a days driving.
I think it may be beneficial to wrap the turbo which would bring down the temperature in the engine bay and possibly boost performance/ efficiency somewhat.
I found an old post where a member had bought a turbo wrap from Advanced thermal products.
Any suggestions or product knowledge would be appreciated.
Thanks
David

I bought a Thermal Zero blanket on Ebay in 2017.  It has worked fine for me, always remaining cool enough to touch.  The thermal image below shows it to the right of the glowing turbo pipe.  This was not taken at full operating temperature but it demonstrates the point.  I think it's made a difference in the bedroom temperature, and might help performance a little bit.

Haven't done ours yet but the next best thing you can do to reduce heat in the area is install a resonator and wrap the piping, lots
of good posts on the subject.

Lots and lots of Turbo blankets on ebay along with the wrap. The 2 cycles take the T6, smaller for the Cummins. turbo wrap | eBay (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR3.TRC0.A0.H0.Xturbo+wrap.TRS0&_nkw=turbo+wrap&_sacat=0)

I just in past 48 hrs received my 2" wrap. Planning on wrapping generator exhaust.
Also as part of my making it mine. I have purchased material to make everything from windshield shield to lining the bedroom with radient barrier. Of course all in attempt to reduce heat from outside. Keeping cold on inside. Windshield will be using sunbrella as inside backing.

Wish I could help but how about contacting one of the sellers and letting him know that you have an 8.3 Cummins? I'm sure he can recommend the size that's right. Sellers usually get back to me quickly and not normally more that a couple of days.

A long resonator may not be too noisy and help keep engine room temps down. With ours, there will be room for another compartment with the huge muffler gone.

Agree that removing the big muffler and replacing with a resonator will lower bedroom temps.
A preformed turbo blanket can be found on ebay once you find your turbo size.

You might double check, but you probably have a Holset HX55 which appears to be close to a T-6.

Thanks Jim - that gives me something to go on.
Just finishing the engine area insulation upgrade and I will start looking for a T6 and check the turbo.
Much appreciated

David, think you have the 8.3 ISC engine. This engine could have the HX 40 turbo, so might be a T6 or a T4. Best to research. Your insulation looks good. Jim

David,

If you go to Cummins Quick serve with your engine number it will give you all the info on your engine, without having to wait till Monday.

I also just finished stripping out the 26 year old decrepit and decaying open-cell foam insulation in the engine compartment. In addition to the old stuff raining black dust with a touch of a finger, I was seriously concerned with a likely fire hazard of major proportions. The replacement is Roxul Wonderboard which is made into rockwool panels, 2'x4'x1.5". Basically R6 insulation. I adhered it with 2" particleboard screws (larger head) and fender washers. The next step will be to cover that with either more insulation with a foil exterior, or with sheet metal.

I am open to suggestions about what the next layer should be. My guiding vision is a photograph I saw of Chuck's (Chuck & Jeannie) engine compartment with the LED work/accent lights around the top. I believe he was showing the placement of his new battery isolator, but I was enraptured by his set-up. (Not normally obsessive...I can feel the mania building for cleaning and shining and even painting as I make friends with my engine compartment :-)
