Title: Grandvilla windshield replacement/ repair
Post by: Gerry Vicha on August 18, 2019, 10:04:43 am
Well I had two windshields replaced in my 1994 U300 this past May. The installer sounded knowledgeable enough with motorhome experience.  The job looked fine the fit looked good I was 😂 happy. I never had a problem with the passenger side of the windshield however that is the side that took a hit from a rock while I was traveling north to Ohio one year ago in May. Fractured a perfectly good windshield.  So I went to the factory just outside of Toledo Ohio and bought two new windshields. Saved a lot of money not having them shipped. Took them back to Florida with me and located an installer. As I Said earlier had them installed this past May 2019. Left for Ohio 3rd week of May and took my time getting there. When I parked my coach everything seemed alright. As it sat on a level surface I noticed some water dripping on to the dashboard on the drivers side. Went outside and checked the top corner and found that the gasket had pulled away from the body which allowed water to seep in. Now my motorhome is sitting level on the new air bags that don't leak down and the windshield is moving out from the body on the drivers side. No rot at the dashboard, no de-lamination the side panel, no rust or structure corrosion to the underbody/frame. This coach has never been in ice, snow, salted roads. The coach was sitting when the windshield moved out away from the roof cap.
My question is;  Where is the best place to have this condition fixed? I would like to stay east of the Mississippi River if possible.

Maybe have a look at your front cap  joint.  It may be loose enough to wiggle the nose .
I took mine apart and reglued( structural adhesive) the caps on and sealed the joint. Rivited the cap between each screw.
FWIW I did the same all around the coach . Solid now.
Also look at the Aussie dude that had the same issues. He built a brace for the nose.  it should come up with a search.

I could probably sort  this out for you. Come about Oct.  Backed up tight right now.

With HF's twin windshield suction cups, it's not that hard to move the windshield back into place especially on a warm day. I've done that a couple of times.

I just ordered 2 new ones from FOT. $700 each $200 to ship. How bad did I over pay?

Not bad at all, I got the same price from FOT, and the installer my glass guy here in Riverton had his supplier ordered them from FOT and they tacked on 200
.00 bucks per. So I think you did fine Ted 👍

The crating of the glass is $ 200.00 per piece.  I paid about $ 400.00 per side for the glass I made my own glass rack and transported in the back of my pick up truck. I had to assume all responsibility at the shipping dock. So my investment in the glass was right at $ 800.00

Revising this post.
After two years, I am having problems with my windshields. I do not think that they were installed properly. The passenger side appears to be about 1/2 inch too far to the center of the coach, it also appeared to be under some stress and has developed several cracks in the top outside corner. The drivers side appears to have shifted out away from the body, out of the gasket and thus allowing water to enter. I am going to have this fixed and I am looking for advice on where to take it for the best perminant fix. Right now I am in Ohio, however I want it fixed right,so I am willing to travel just about anywhere. Looking for recommendations ...

Just had my windshields done there, U270. They found a problem at top of cap and fixed it before installing glass. You get a 10% discount if Motorcade member.

One would think so. Not my experience though. I think the best Grand Villa owners can do is address any delamination issue (below dash and front cap sidewalls) and once those windshields are reinstalled, do all you can to avoid twisting the rig. Just my opinion.
