Title: cargo bay leak
Post by: RRadio on August 24, 2019, 07:39:41 pm
I've been battling a leak in the cargo bay for years now. It happens when it rains hard. I've applied silicone caulk everywhere I can think of and I made it leak less often, but it still leaks sometimes. Has anyone on here had this same problem and figured out how to stop the leak?

Maybe blowing in around your hot water heater vent? I keep a neatly folded towel on the bay floor below that vent and it will be damp if conditions are right.

If you have a strip of trim above the door make sure its caulked top and bottom. Other than that triple check the seal and the corners.

After I resealed the gutter over the door it reduced the leaking a lot. I'll seal the bottom of it too. I hadn't thought of the water heater but that makes sense and I'll check that out.

Reach your hand around behind the seal with a flashlight.  Any protruding screws that exhibit rust need caulked.

Maybe I'll replace the rubber gaskets around the cargo bay doors on both sides even though they don't look like they're leaking. Should I call Foretravel's parts department or is that available through NAPA or O'Reilly or someplace?

Scott,
If you call Foretravel hang on to your hiney. Several years ago that gasket material was $4 per foot.

If your compartments are molded fiberglass (ours are), lay on your back looking up inside the compartment--right behind the outside wall where the compartment top meets the wall.
One of our storage compartments leaked, no matter what I did, until I did what I just suggested. Caulked the gap and now no more leak!

Back when I was working on old cars, the outfit linked below was a good source for hard to find rubber products.  If FOT is too pricey, you might see if they have what you need at Steele, and what they want for it.

You could call Xtreme and ask them where to buy aftermarket.

I just had this same problem and someone told me about adjusting the door. It worked. There are a top and bottom latch. No leaks now.
