I am in the process of changing my coolant and realized that the top hose on the coolant recovery tank is not connected to anything and there is no cap on it. Is this the way it is supposed to be? The overflow from the radiator is connected to the lower part of the recovery tank.
Photo below of my tank. Inlet from coolant reservoir tank at bottom. Overflow goes out the top tube and dumps on the ground.
Non-vented cap should be in place to keep dirt out of the overflow tank.

That tank is better described as an "expansion" tank. As the coolant heats it recovers and holds the coolant, then as the engine cool the coolant contracts and is sucked back into the cooling system. ^.^d
Chuck,
Was that tank "stock" on your U280? I don't have one but I'd like to add one at some point. At your convenience, I''d like to see a "wide angle" shot of your engine compartment to see where it's mounted. Also, what PSI radiator cap are you using?

Thank you. Mystery solved.
