Today I was changing my belts and hoses on my 2001 8.3 Cummins. All was going well, hoses were done and I was putting on the belts when my "helpful" neighbor dropped by. Long story short, we got into a discussion and the belts and he was adamant that the main serpentine belt needed to be synced together between the two main pulleys ( upper and lower). I questioned him saying that if you lost a belt on the highway and pulled over to changed it, there was no way the two main pulleys ( upper and lower) would be in sync with each other.
I tried to explain to him that I felt he was referring to a timing belt on a car that dives the cam.
Feel I was correct, but he got me wondering. Am I correct ?
Thanks to all.
I say; he is mistaken.
Thank you, I thing he was thinking about a timing belt. I told him that I could spin the pulleys (if possible) as much as I wanted, put the belt on and be fine. Just as if I threw a belt on the highway while running.
Just needed someone with more knowledge that me to restore my confidence :)
Serpentine belts have no teeth to maintain sync.
Thanks Peter, I feel better, was sitting here happy to have new belts and hoses, even though it ran fine, I started second guessing myself.
Never listen to the "helpful" neighbor !!!
TGordan said it nicely and in a PC manner. ^.^d can't argue with idiots. Belts also slip :o. Maybe his mechanic charges extra for a belt sync. ;)
The muffler belt can be a real bugger to time, especially on an RV.
Cogged belts, like timing belts ARE timed.
Serpentine belts like on any diesel are NOT.
