Title: Serpentine belt
Post by: Dub on October 15, 2019, 01:59:02 pm
I have replaced belt tension and belts on this 96 8.3 Cummins..the water pump/alt belt on Beam Alarm calls for a Gates k080605. This belt is to tight and squeaks.. mainly concerned with this killing the alternator bearing.. did a search last night and probably found my answer but can't find it today. Has anyone with 8.3 had a similar issue and if so what Gates belt number is a tad bit longer? Can barely get this belt on,, tad bit to short.

Appreciate that, I hope to find a manual engine to compare... Differences who knows. I'm at orielys and the boy on the computer is not going to be much help.

Dub,

You could always contact Gates with your part number and ask them for their next length up (and find out how much longer it is).

Can you compare old and new belt lengths?  Is .5" longer enough/correct?

Dub you are correct the Beamalarm part number is to short. I think that 1/2 longer belt is correct. I'm not near the coach right now so can't get the number.

Bret.. old belt was a bit tighter but 2 groves gone. I've replaced total of 3 pulleys so that may have made a bit of difference. I'm leaning with Bruce on the belt difference.

Make sure you have same number of groves as pulleys.  I had a bad water pump, not leaking, could not feel looseness in bearing, alignment ok, still caused belt to fray off one groove on belt. Replaced pump, problem solved.

Yes, ALWAYS check each "accessory" for bearing smoothness, lack of play and pulley alignment!

The last 3 numbers in the majority of belts are the first 2 numbers are in inches and the last one is in 10ths.

Replaced water pump today it had a tiny bit of play but didn't stop the noise.Removed and inspected idler pulley bearing and it was good.. What stopped the noise was a wire brush cleaning of all groves on idler pulley and crank pulley.. Bit of rust dust rose.. shinny now and quiet. A second set of eyes said to stay with the Gates K080605 on this one. Thanks to all who replied.

When you check for alignment, make sure you include vertical alignment as well as using a straight edge for horizontal alignment.

Dub, keep in mind mine is a ISC 99. But here are the belt numbers that fit mine. Gates HD K080685 WP ALT. Gates K080465 for hyd pump. I figured all this out beside the road when the spares where wrong. These numbers make the idlers run in the middle of thier tension range. Good luck

10/4 Bruce.. I will put your numbers in notes while I keep an eye on the belts that are on mine.. I did look at the groves in the easier places I could see on the pulleys looking for dirt, oil and such and didn't notice anything obvious. Friend of mine took a wire brush/ wheel and went over the pulley grooves but good and shined them up making everything smooth and quiet. I've had over 30 class 8 diesel trucks and have never seen dirty pullies do like this.. pure wonderment but it does stand to reason.. Sometimes the smallest of chores kick my tail the hardest..
