Title: Hydraulic filter
Post by: bigdog on October 25, 2019, 01:34:17 pm
Took the coach in this week for a pretrip oil change, chassis lube, Diff oil. Asked that the hydraulic fluid be changed as well. But that will need to be delayed. They looked for two days and were only able to locate the hyd filter in California. Are these filters that rare?
On the plus side, They said the Hydraulic fluid looked, smelled fresh & the current filter looked very clean.

Unless they pulled it out of the canister how did they "look" at the filter?

Good question. But just repeating what they said. Perhaps after pulling the filters out of the oil canister, and they looked at the inside area if the hole was big enough. Or even just how much crud (or not) was on the outer side.
Either way, They said the oil looked very clean. But did recommend changing it anyway while we were on our winter trip.

Do not allow anyone to remove one of those filters with the reservoir full.

That just allows the unfiltered/dirty fluid on the outside of the filter to bypass the filters and go to the "clean side".

To properly change the filters, you must siphon/drain the fluid so the clean, filtered oil is not contaminated with unfiltered oil.

That prompted me to call the shop. And I must have misunderstood (imagine that!) They said that they do not mess with filters unless they have new ones to replace them. So they did not mess with the hyd oil at all other than to pull a sample to look at the oil.
