Title: Anyone bought lead acid 8D house batteries recently (Huntsville AL)
Post by: Carl Cox on November 20, 2019, 06:52:55 pm
I need 2 new 8D house bank batteries and as we are always plugged in to shore power probably best to get the standard and most affordable.  NAPA has 8Ds for $249 + refundable core which seems like a good deal....any other places I should look?  The current Les Shawb 8D (no dates) are probably pretty old but I have no one to blame but myself as I did not check the water (I thought they were maintenance free -  turns they're not).

Bought the Napa ones last spring, love them. Made by East Penn/ Deka. With my account, on sale three out the door with tax and exchange, right under $600.00

I bought from O'Reillys.  I liked the service they offered to take old battery out and put new battery back in.  All I did was park in their lot and take a 1/2" wrench and undo the cable ends and watched the manager lift those 160 lb. batteries.

Easy peasy.

Swing by The Battery Store"  (Yea real creative name) on North West Washington St. It is between 565 and 431 just south of Oakwood. Home town guy and will meet or beat any price in town. I will see if I have one of his cards that has his phone number and post it later.

Flooded cell batteries can and do emit explosive gases.  The battery compartment was made for sealed batteries. Little venting.  Dangerous.

Older unihomes had a fiberglass cover over the battery vented to the wheel well area designed for flooded cells.

I replaced my Interstate 8DXHD's  Interstate Batteries | 8D-XHD (https://www.interstatebatteries.com/products/8d-xhd) last year at the local Interstate Battery store for $190 ea.

If you're in Huntsville there is a distributor there.  Location Finder (https://www.interstatebatteries.com/location-finder?search=Huntsville%20al&dealerservices=&dealertypes=&producttypes=&sku=8D-XHD)

Rural King has the best battery prices I have found. At times they also have an additional 7 percent off. ^.^d

I second what Bob is saying above.
The original batteries were sealed Gel, at least put in sealed AGM.  Locally when my batteries failed, I recently replaced mine with these sealed AGM.  They will give a 10% veterans discount.  Others have posted getting 10% off by just asking because of the high price and buying more than one.

Good advice from Roger, he posted: "Shop around.  Many get good batteries at O'Rileys.  A FMCA Diesel Powerclub membership will save you more than it costs."

This is what I now have now, purchased July 2019 for approx $413 each.  For free Oreillys helped remove and install.

Problem solved.....very happy with the Exide 8D 1155 CCA batteries purchased today at Rural King here in Huntsville for 144.99 each.  We were able to install them ourselves...not that hard.  Cleaned up the terminals with CRC and then sprayed with Battery sealant.  Amazing selection of all sizes of batteries at Rural King.  They don't install but helped in and out of the CR-V .  Both batteries were made in August 19 and shipped in November and they had 3 in stock.  Water in all the cells was correctly filled and voltage was 12.8 in both.  Thanks to all for the advice...especially Vicha and Protech Racing.  I saved a good amount due to this board....next best price was as O'rilies was $194 and with a AAA discount Napa was $199.  $144.95 for Exide was a great deal.  No further news is good news on this topic....
