Title: Compartment keys for older GVs
Post by: nitehawk on December 08, 2019, 09:07:40 am
i had a key break off when trying to open the dump compartment three years ago while in TX. I knew the tanks were quite full so it was imperative I do a dump. Luckily we had spares, but now we were down to only one key for the compartments.
We went to Walmart for a new key--no luck.
We went to Lowes for a key-- no luck.
We went to Tractor Supply for a key--no luck.
We went to an ACE Hardware store in a small town-- no problem. The girl took one look at the key and said no problem. Turns out the key blank is proprietary to Ace. No one else had it.
SO, if you owners of the older GVs need compartment keys I recommend  saving some time and running around and go directly to an Ace Hardware store.

In an emergency you can always ask another Foretraveler. I believe that most of the locks are the same.

We had a lock break a while back, so I ordered a new one from Foretravel. The new lock came with two keys and both the old and new keys fit all of the locks.

You might also ask any other RV'er with an exterior compartment if their keys fit. Some years ago people were all worried that all RVs used the same keys for the exterior locks, meaning that there was little purpose in locking compartments in a campground.
