Title: Servicing leece Neville alternator
Post by: kevo0000 on January 02, 2020, 02:52:27 pm
, what is the best way to clean of the surface rust of my alternator and the armature, the copper windings look clean , personally I would use a very fine sandpaper, or maybe someone has a better idea , also I'm thinking of replacing with new regulator , I think I may have blown it when I connected wrong way round , 1 of the brushes is stuck inside and the other wasn't alot left on it , so would a new regulator come complete with new brushes ?  Also can I test the coil windings using a normal volt meter / continuaty tester , ?

Be careful of using anything on the commutator. They make a special product for it, Emery or sandpaper is not good.

The last Leece Neville alternator I owned was in my 1964 White.  So THAT alternator had a separate holder for the brushes.  And a separate regulator.

Yes you can test the alternator windings for continuity and compare the resistance of one coil to another.

If your Volt Ohm Meter has a diode position you can test the alternator diodes.

You can get new brushes and a new regulator. I use a paper clip that I have straightened to hold the brushes and then put the regulator on then before tightening the regulator pull out the clip or you can use a drill bit to hold the brushes.

Thanks for bringing back the memories, Red Tractor. My dad repaired alternators that same way for 30+ years. I can remember walking into his shop as a teenager and thinking how wierd that "thing" looked with a paper clip stuck in it. 😯
