Title: Generator slide out question.
Post by: saddlesore on January 06, 2020, 12:26:08 pm
'02 320.
I haven't ever rolled the gennie out so am total newbie..
After getting the exhaust un bolted and the bolts in front removed, How far out will it slide?
Is there a stop or should I affix a strap so the gennie doesn't roll all the way out and mash my toe?
Is it enough to access the "inner coolant" hose clamps that connect to the ones that go direct to the radiator??
This is where the ones from the radiator go thru the outer box at the top drivers side rear, with a pipe thru the box and hoses that go to the quiet box for the engine...
My coolant leak seems to be the "inner" hose's that allow to slide the quiet box out, or the clamps.

thnx

There should be enough flex exhaust pipe behind the gen to where you won't have to unbolt it.. mine and some others I've seen do.

On my 03, I too have to unbolt the exhaust flex hose before I can pull the unit out.

It will pull about 1/2 way and should stop, mine did

can't get mine all the way out either without undoing the exhaust. Don't know what would happen  if you pull it all the way out, but on mine I suspect it would fall out. The slide needs work.

I forgot to mention that there's a 'tab' welded on the slide rail to keep it from coming all the way out. Not sure of your year but can't imagine why there wouldn't be one also.

Richard,  I think my tab is held with screws making it removable so the genset can be pushed further out or removed.

I have a 1998 you 270 with the Protech generator mounted in the front. I just had it out and reinstalled it. On mine there is a welded tab that hits a metal roller that is installed at the top of the rail. Mine won't pull out too far, but I found service to the fan belt and other items does require removal of the bottom sound panel to gain full access. To remove the generator all the way you must remove that top roller on my generator, and of course remove key electrical connectors, fuel lines, ground strap, Hot lead to the starter. There are two bolts that hold the slide tray in place, make sure you tighten them back up because it can sound like the generator is about to destroy itself if there's enough play on the slide tray to create vibration.
