I want to replace my fresh water pump.
I don't have an accumulator tank and I don't want to blow my plumbing out with too much pressure.
Any new tech or good old tech pumps to recommend?
Lon,
I installed a Shurflo 4008 four years ago, and have been very happy with the performance. I retained the accumulator tank on our coach (personal preference), but it is not required with this pump. I also recommend the silencing kit and the inlet "strainer" to go with the pump.

The pump I want to replace is a Shurflo 4048.
I don't see anything that's a newer design or would work better for my application, I might as well make it simple and replace with the same pump.
Mine works great with an accumulator
I have the 4048. I removed the accumulator when I installed it as the documentation indicates it shouldn't be used with an accumulator. Nevertheless, I installed an accumulator again. It works fine either way.

With all the advances in electric motors and batteries I'm surprised that nothing new has been introduced into the market.
I see HUGE advances in battery powered power tools. More power, less energy used, smaller packages. My Milwaukee 18v Fuel tools are beasts.
I know the motor in my water pump is not run off a battery but I'm sure technology in 12v motors and pump design and control of there production must have advanced since these pumps were first introduced years ago.
That "new" model will most likely be introduced the day AFTER I buy my replacement.
Like this one, I've used for a year. I especially like the increased flow and pressure over replaced pump. Also the run dry and self priming features are worthwhile. Amazon gives all the features and specs in this listing.
Also it is shipped and sold by Amazon, I've had good service buying their products, and 74% 5 star rated, 16% 4 star, pretty good for an electrical rv item primarily installed by users.

Thats the same pump I'm now looking to replace with something of a more current design. Mine dates back to 2009.
You're doing the right thing.
Shurflo
has always been a great product
It appears this pump first came out in 2012. Can you post a picture of the pump label which will show your model number and date manufacturered?
This is the second rv I've used this model pump in, the first in 2014, and this one two years ago in 2018. I have never been let down. I originally bought it because it was recommended to me by our parts manager who continued carrying the pump since our shop foreman insisted it was the best one available. The shop foreman liked its reliability, adjustability, and performance. The parts manager liked it because he did not get returns.
When you find a better pump that you buy, measure, and use, please post what you ended up with and why it is an improvement. I like new technology too, I just haven't seen it yet over this proven excellent pump. It seems like yours not failing in eleven years is a testimonial.
You might be able to rebuild your 4048 pump. I just replaced the drive assembly on mine. About 5 years old. Daily use.

Pull the head off the pump by removing the 8 screws on the front. Plug the motor in to 12v if it runs smooth it's an issue with the pump head. The assembly I replaced is the most likely place to fail. It has a bearing that causes the oscillation that drives the pump. Fixed for less than $30. YMMV
If motor dead new pump. :(

You are correct, a second look at the label on the pump states 2/9/12
The pump did not really fail, the plastic end cracked ( I believe from freezing this fall), the internals still work fine.
I will probably still buy a new one and then re-build this one for a spare if the parts cost is is not excessive.
Great that ken brought up the replacement parts that are easily available on Amazon. See attached pdf of manual for 4048, with list and diagram of replacement parts, to make sure you only order what is needed. That is much less than buying a new pump.
Lon, I kept my old pump, as there was nothing wrong with it, I just wanted a pump with increased flow. I thought I might use it for another project. Now two years later, it is off to Craigslist with it for 1/2 the price of a new one. New it was a much less expensive Shure Flow pump than the 4048-153-E75.
Usual cracked part from freezing
