Title: U320 Tag Axle Fully Loaded Weight?
Post by: Twolanes on April 19, 2020, 11:44:40 am
Hello All,
I've been researching Foretravel coaches and have learned a great deal from the enthusiastic members posting on this forum, thank you.

One thing I haven't been able to find is the actual, fully loaded, road ready weight of a 2001-2003 40', U320, tag axle coach, two slides.  Finding actual front and rear axle weights would be great!  All four corners would be even better!  So I thought I would ask the community to see if anyone has had their coach weighed?

Thanks for your help.

Fully loaded for one person could be over 1000 lbs different from another. But someone can post what theirs is.

Here's the tag from our 2003 42'.  I thought I had a scale weight but don't see in in my notes.

As Craneman has stated each individual's coach weight is going to vary.  Our coach has been heavily modified and we are full timers so everything we own is in our coach.  Our 2004 38' 2 slide (3820) axle weights with full fuel and fresh water are as follows:

Steer Axle:  12,200#
Drive Axle:    18,080#
Tag Axle:        7,680#

My max weights per axle are the same as the Johnston's.

Good luck,
Oscar

We live in our 2003 4010 fulltime and had the following weights in March of this year. The tag axle has pros and cons, with the tag you have more weight capacity but less room to store that extra weight.

R Front 6300 lb
L Front 6350 lb
R Rear 8800 lb
L Rear 8400 lb
R Tag 3700 lb
L Tag 3300 lb

Max weights are the same as the silver Tag listed above by Rick.

Thank you for all the replies, particularly the two members that replied with their actual coach weight, this is exactly the information I had been seeking. It is interesting to me that these two coaches are #960 apart. Not crazy far apart, and neither of these full timers are close to their rated #42000 GVWR.

My wife and I are in the process of looking for a new (to us) coach. The 01-03 U320 tag axle appears to be a solid coach and a good fit for us and how we intend to use our RV. However, before I purchase, and never owning a Foretravel previously, I am trying to learn as much as possible about this model of Foretravel. This includes a few typical ranges of operating weights for the 01-03 U320 tag axle coaches and how closely this approaches the rated GVWR. So again, thank you for the help, it looks good so far.

The reason I ask these weight related questions is, I am not only looking to understand the capabilities of the coach I intend to purchase, but also looking for a coach that will potentially be able to handle the additional weight of a Hydralift  motorcycle carrier.  I have read that Hydralifts have been successfully installed on the tag axle U320, but I need to do my own research before I consider it a safe addition. But this is a topic I will ask about at another time/thread.

We have an 03' 38ft U-320 tag and had Hydra-lift install their platform lift about 5 months back.  Shortly after getting the lift installed, we had the coach weighed.

The numbers are in this thread, but the bottom line is the weight of the lift and bikes was not a problem.  YMMV!
(follow up thread) Tire load ratings and inflation - G vs H (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=38075.msg368665#msg368665)

One thing to consider is that the hydra-lift install involved cutting into the rear fiberglass engine cover/door.  We had to pay an additional $700 to have a fiberglass shop tidy it all up and match the paint.  Also the bottom 1/2 of the roof ladder has to be removed so it doesn't interfere with the lift/bike.  That also leaves holes in the body work that need to be covered or filled in and painted.

Let me know if you have any other questions regarding the lift.

Colaradomtn,
Thanks for posting!  Learning from your recent experience installing a Hydralift will be very helpful.  I'll send you a PM.

I don't have my coach any longer but we had 3K extra and that included a couple handicap scooters
