Title: Adding side cameras
Post by: Moby on April 21, 2020, 01:45:49 pm
I'm in the process of replacing the Javelina CRT monitor with the Pyle flat screen monitor and it occurs to me that I have three unused video inputs.
Hmmm.
Might be a good idea to add side cameras since I have:
The time.
The video inputs
A wide open dash to string wires.

Any suggestion as to which camera would work best?  I did discover that some cams have strange connections and not RCA/BNC type.  Not into finding strange adaptors without big payoff.

Have you driven a coach with side cameras yet?  If you have and you like them just stop reading now.  My previous coach had them and I did not like them - mirrors for me worked so much better.  Now if you were to install side sensors that would audibly warn you of someone in your blind spot that would be awesome.

I change lanes "in a deliberate fashion" so there are no surprises.  When I hear a horn sounding I know that they see me changing lanes.

In all fairness to camera manufacturers, all cable connectors are standard.  You just haven't learned of them yet.

I've found :
RCA
BNC
4 PIN
None of which are directly interchangeable.

No, I haven't.  Looking to be as proactively safe as possible. Why did you not like the cameras?
Mirrors still have blind spots. IMHO.
Now, a side sensor sounds like an idea.
Anywhere to find them?

Sorry no.when driving near a cell tower the camera will roll or get fuzzy for a bit ,10 or 15 seconds. Then they clear up till you are the same distance past the tower then they goof up again.
Minor annoyance. Also I'll never drive a coach without side cams. NO blind spots

I used one Tadi Bros right side hardwired camera.  It comes on when the rt turn signal is on.  Mirror first, display second looking in blind spot, both looking to the right.  Thought about one on the left but I don't want to look right to see what is going on on the left side.  Mirrors provide good coverage on the left side so just the one side cam.  It does help especially in traffic.  I like mine.  It is so easy to hardwire why add the wireless complication and instability.

Don't forget the type F, that's the cable connection on your television.  Then there are the "UHF" connectors, the venerable PL-259 - SO-239 pair, and this is all before we get to the Deutsches Institut für Normung aka DIN connectors.  These are the little ones with pins.
Once you know the name, you can look up what you need to purchase.

Have a model # handy?

Our coach had an oem installed right side camera when built new.  Low on the right front corner.  Use it all the time. Plus the mirrors of course.  Trust not

I have left and right side cameras and use them.. I do still use my mirrors I suppose a 50 year stint in transportation some habits will never leave me but I think that's a good thing.. Can't help you with the cables Moby because I don't do wires and cables. I bit the bullet and took mine to MOT and had Clyde install.. Beside driving it's neet to be able while sitting still to have a 360 view of who may be walking up to the coach or after I've been parked on a busy parking lot see who may have parked near me while I wasn't looking.. Cameras are something an old dog can do without but after having a good system I would rather not.

This is what I did. Two moniters directly above ,where the old t.v. was. The left moniter is split screen left and right side views, the right moniter is the rear cam.both are on all the time when driving. A glance up and I can see everything.
