Title: 2003 U295 Aquahot - New Noise, Which model? and Local service?
Post by: OSIN on May 09, 2020, 05:46:22 am
1st let me say I know nothing about these units. We had it serviced at FOT about 18 months ago, and it's been fine.

I noticed today after the heater was turned off that I was hearing a squeaking sound after the burner shut off and the unit appeared to be in some kind of cooldown? Lasted a few minutes. I imagine it was probably doing this while the burner was on too, but the burner noise was the only thing I noticed while running?

How do I identify which model I have? There are no ID plates/stickers that I can see. I can't even figure out how to access the guts? Told you I know nothing...lol

Does anyone have recommendations for mobile service in the Santa Rosa, CA Area? That's where we're currently located during the Covid19 shutdown.

Thanks, Paul

congratulations on having a U295 with Aquahot.  I think the tag is on the side where you can't see it.  Our 2003 has this one

Paul, the very best AH service in CA is Art Twaddell, 8 zero 5  7 one 2  9449.  Call him and he will tell you where he is.

Art can answer all you AH questions.  I can too so if you want my input, send me a PM with your phone number.

Congrats on having a big AH, not the baby one in the SOBs.  They are very capable.

The burner needs to be run once per month, every month, period to maintain a clesn nozzle providing a fine mist fan spray that will burn completely with no visible vapor.  Once smelling or smoking starts, the burner is telling to get it serviced.  Once per month prolongs the interval between services a lot.

Enjoy your coach.

My AH had a sticker similar to Rick's except that the model # and the serial # weren't printed, they were etched into the plate. It was difficult to see if the light wasn't just right. I suggest that if you need to clean the plate off, DON'T  use brake cleaner. It will clean the plate very good, very quickly. However, it also takes off the printed information from the factory. Don't ask me how I know this  :o

Dim memory of a "cool down" cycle?

Thanks Rudy, I'll give him a ring on Monday! It's about 3/4 of the size of the fuel tank...LOL We did run it weekly, the noise is what I was most worried about, so it's cold showers for now!

There is a short cool down period after the burner shuts off.  If you are getting a whirring sound that starts and stops several times after the burner stops, it is your electronic control box failing.  Rudy on this board is the one to take to if that's the case.

As in a fan or something is still running after the boiler shuts off, pretty common in a commercial application to stage on and stage off

I think I found the issue, now that I have the model number (thanks) looks like a very similar unit.

I located a manual and looked at the sequence of operations. From what I see, It's somewhat like a commercial sequence. They call it a "Purge Mode" which the motor cools down the combustion chamber waiting for the next cycle.

My guess is it's most likely the motor inside the burner assy.  Should be fairly easy,  now I just need that Tech!

Thanks.

Not stopping and starting, but it sounds more like a bearing fail. I spoke to Art on the phone but he's 5 hours from me. I've got a call into a mobile Aquahot Tech within 70 miles from me.

Thanks for the heads up.

You should be fine using the electric mode this time of year.

I do remember coming to check on you at Lake Thunderbird.  You have a beautiful coach.

Thanks, I almost forgot about using the electric. I'm still going to get it fixed before my memory goes out the window.😂

aquahot is pretty simple to work on once you have the basics down.. depending on mechanical ability and tools in the drawer. If you want a good education look into the recent aquahot rebuild thread .. it will give wealth of knowledge .

One option is to send the entire burner assembly to Roger Berke.  He will inspect and rebuild the burner for a flat fee of $400.
I had him rebuild my burner last year while in Alaska and it took about a week.  May be a shorter time if you're in California.

I bought one of these from Art and can just switch it out until I repair mine. It has all the parts except controller which I have 2 spares of.

If I could figure out how to get this damn cover off, I'd be way ahead. OK Foretravel, you messed me up on this one!. No access panels to get to the side of the unit?  I'll see if I can attach pics.

I spoke to Art, this looks like the way to go, When I figure out the cover and hoses, I'll have a better look. They certainly did not make this easy to access, still scratching my head!  :D

Try looking in this website for discontinued models, could hold the answer.

On mine it takes a very stubby or an angel Phillips screwdriver to get next to the fuel tank.  There are probably only one or two screws tightened on it.  The top just lifts up.  I will try to send you a picture how the top comes off because mine is off right now.

There's about 1 inch between the unit and my Fuel Tank? (Fuel tank is on the Left of the Aquahot) I'm kinda lost on this one, got an email to Art.

Maybe the entire unit needs to come out? If so It's not a DIY anymore...LOL

 Thanks Paul

OSIN, two screws on right hand side of unit as you are looking at it. My fuel tank is to the right of the Aquahot but should be the same layout.

I bet you can work that cover up and off.  It's surely been serviced in 17 years and they had no way to put the screws back.

YAY, Art showed me how to remove the cover, I just needed to buy a set of long needle nose vice grips to grab the screws (tight fit). Art had a good idea for the future, changing the Panhead screws to a socket head, or something that works better with limited clearance. Hopefully, I can find thumb screws in S/S, that's probably the way I'll go.  Now I just need to remove the burner assy and send it along for new bearings and whatever else I need. Thanks for all your help here.

Thanks, I must have a strange one. the HWH controllers are to the right, fuel to the left. No way could I even fit a stubby in there, I first purchased a tiny ratcheting device that holds bits, but the screws were in too tight, or no leverage, back to the store and a very long set of needle nose vice grips worked!

My guess is it is the motor making the noise. Had to replace one on the Monaco. If it is the burner bearings, the noise would be coming from the housing rubbing on the turbine.

Update, Got the unit out and it's on the way to Art. He's been awesome to speak with. Got some new Marine Fuel hose as the original lines inside the unit we're pretty hard, and I'll get a new fuel filter too. She's all cleaned up, and ready for the burner to come back!

Thanks again for your help! love this forum!
